Run with care and dedication since 1999 by Adam and Jan Moore, Trigony House offers everything one looks for in a small, private country house hotel: good food, comfortable bedrooms, unfussy country style and, through many windows, wonderful garden, grounds and landscape all around. If you are looking for a pet friendly hotel, make tracks, for at award-winning Trigony dogs aren’t just allowed, they are greeted with a welcome box and by resident golden retriever Roxy. And if you would like to experience a house that was once home for a 100 years to Scotland’s oldest woman (who died aged 107) and the sense of peace it exudes, then double your efforts. For breakfast and dinner you will eat the best of produce from the local farming community and from the hotel’s own walled garden, while the house itself is full of period features, including Japanese oak panelling and art deco windows. ‘The Lord Bless Thy Coming Out and Going In’, announces an inscription above the front door. A lovely place.
Drumlanrig Castle, Morton & Caerlaverock Castles & Prince Charles’s now completed restoration project of Dumfries House are well worth a visit.
There are some lovely country pubs serving good food not too far from Trigony including The Auldgirth INN at Auldgirth just 5 miles from Trigony, The Buccleuch in Thornhill just 1 mile & The Anchor at Kippford on the Solway Coast half an hour away.
There are a couple of interesting Boutiques in Thornhill just a mile from Trigony, also a Chinese antique centre in an old Church and a wonderful gift and craft shop called Thomas Tosh with its own excellent café. Further afield, Castle Douglas has some great individual shops and excellent Art Galleries – especially recommended would be The Duncan McGill Gallery for its display of local artists.
