Is This Chelsea’s Hottest New Address?

There’s a lot going on at Chelsea Waterfront, a sprawling riverside development which now comprises a huge collection of luxury apartments set across 10 buildings. The crowning jewel, however, is Chelsea Powerhouse – formerly known as Lots Road Power Station – which once served as the central power station for the London Underground. Today, it offers 260 incredible new homes.

Chelsea Powerhouse: You Can Now Live Inside This Historic Power Station

Step inside Chelsea Powerhouse and you’ll find yourself in a huge atrium boasting two enormous chimneys. Just one carefully restored part of the building’s original structure, they serve as a reminder of Powerhouse’s fascinating heritage: dating back to 1905, it was at the time one of the biggest power stations ever built – and it went on to power most of the London Underground. The site was officially closed in 2002, and it has now been reimagined as one of Chelsea’s most exciting residential developments.

While the chimneys are hard to miss, there are plenty of other design references to Powerhouse’s past. Bronze, steel and iron abound, and hung between the two chimneys is a breathtaking lighting installation emulating an electric current. For all its historical significance, however, the site is now complete with an array of modern luxuries, too: residents can enjoy a private Club Lounge, a waterside restaurant and a dazzling wellness centre containing a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, gym and 20-metre swimming pool.

The residences themselves command spectacular views of Chelsea Waterfront, with some rooms looking inwards across the atrium. Kitchens feature top-of-the-range integrated appliances and custom-made cabinets, while bedrooms are complete with bespoke lacquered wardrobes and bathrooms are finished with handmade tiles and more bespoke cabinets.

Within Powerhouse’s two newly-unveiled show apartments, meanwhile, you’ll spot sumptuous interiors courtesy of award-winning design studio Morpheus & Co. The first apartment – a four-bedroom property spanning nearly 1,800 square feet – showcases a blend of industrial charm and Art Deco touches which pay homage to the designs on the London Underground. (Expect geometric motifs, bespoke hallway mirrors and a gorgeous curved sofa). The second show apartment provides three bedrooms and boasts a unique circular window preserved from the building’s original façade – with design features like a statement copper mirror providing further nods to Powerhouse’s past.
