All the winners from the RIBA National Awards 2024
Every year, the Royal Institute of British Architects puts together a list of the UK’s best buildings. But what makes a winning building, and which ones were selected for 2024? Here’s everything you need to know about The RIBA National Awards 2024.
The RIBA National Awards 2024: These Are The UK’s Best Buildings
Picture famous buildings in the UK and the list is endless – from The Shard to Shakespeare’s Globe and Edinburgh Castle. But which ones are the best? The RIBA National Awards celebrate architectural excellence by collating a list of the UK’s best buildings, as selected by a special jury from the RIBA Awards Group.
This year, 26 buildings have made the cut, having been picked from an initial list of 111. Each of these winners will now be considered for the coveted RIBA Stirling Prize recognising the best building of the year.
There’s a huge variety of projects on the list, spanning London landmarks like Battersea Power Station; a Cambridge college dining hall; and even the entire Elizabeth Line (with a separate mention going to Paddington Elizabeth Line Station). The Royal Academy of Dance and the newly transformed National Portrait Gallery are also on the list, alongside a community school in Derbyshire, a social housing project in Glasgow, and a private house on a farm in Ballynahinch, Northern Ireland.
RIBA described Battersea Power Station as ‘a deeply impressive scheme that combines carefully restored heritage assets, high-quality homes, and a contemporary retail experience, all tied together with an industrial aesthetic appropriate to the original power station’s awesome scale and character.’ Paddington’s Elizabeth Line Station, meanwhile, represented ‘a pivotal moment in London’s transportation landscape.’ Check out the full list of winners below.
