Here’s what you need to know
The countdown is on: there’s just one month to go before the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards return to the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. And the nominees are…
Analysis: Which Films Are Poised To Win Big?
Which films have the most 2025 BAFTA nominations – and are they even British? Leading the pack is Conclave, Ralph Fiennes’ pope drama directed by Austrian-Swiss Edward Berger and written by Brit Peter Straughan, based on fellow Brit Robert Harris’ 2016 novel. Conclave is up for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Leading Actor (Ralph Fiennes), Best Leading Actress (Isabella Rossellini), Best Casting, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score and Best Production Design – so it’s poised to bag at least a handful of trophies.
Conclave is closely followed by Emilia Perez – French director Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language Mexican-drug-cartel transition drama filmed in France, perhaps one of the most controversial films on this year’s awards circuit – with 11 nominations in many of the same categories. Brady Corbet’s architectural epic The Brutalist is next up with nine nominations, and after bagging Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, along with two more awards, is poised to be a hot contender at the 2025 BAFTAs. They’re all trailed by Anora, Dune: Part Two and Wicked with seven nominations each; A Complete Unknown and Kneecap with six nominations each; and Nosferatu and The Substance with five nominations each.
This is a big year for BAFTA Film newcomers – though you’ll certainly recognise their names: Cynthia Erivo, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Demi Moore, Kieran Culkin, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong have all earned their first nominations in 2025, with more than half of the 24 performance nominees nominated for their very first BAFTA Film award.
For British film fans, the category to keep your eye on is Outstanding British Film, with 10 films up for the prestigious prize, won last year by Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (for the full list of 2024 nominees, click here). This year’s nominees span ancient Rome to WWII, ‘80s New Mexico to today’s Orkney Islands; Bird, Blitz, Conclave, Gladiator II, Hard Truths, Kneecap, Lee, Love Lies Bleeding, The Outrun and Aardman’s claymation Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl are all up for the prize.
‘The 42 films nominated today span a fantastically broad spectrum of genres with enormous breadth in creative expression; from the most intimate character pieces to epic societal commentaries via genre-bending dramas, musicals and comedies,’ comments BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip. ‘The film industry has delivered in spades once again. We look forward to acknowledging this amazing body of work at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards. With just over a month to go, we encourage film fans everywhere to watch as many films as possible – there really is something for everyone.’
And the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the 2025 EE Rising Stars, which we get to vote for at home. This year, the following stars are nominated: Marisa Abela, Jharrel Jerome, David Jonsson, Mikey Madison and Nabhaan Rizwan. Cast your vote for the 2025 winner at ee.co.uk/bafta Elsewhere, EE Rising Stars alumni Cynthia Erivo (2019) and Timothée Chalamet (2018) are nominated for BAFTA Film awards.
