Do The Golden Globes Predict The Oscars?

Plus: the 2025 nominees in full
Our first glimpse of awards season 2025 is here, with Emilia Perez bagging 10 nominations for the Golden Globes – making it the most nominated comedy or musical film in the award show’s history. The Brutalist and Conclave are hot on the Netflix original’s heels, while Sebastian Stan and Kate Winslet lead the acting pack with double nominations: the former for The Apprentice and A Different Man, and the latter for Lee and The Regime.
But where do the Golden Globes fit in awards season? And is this list of nominees an oracle for the incoming Oscars shortlist?
Where Do The Golden Globes Fit In Awards Season?
Outside of the US, it can be difficult to decipher the hierarchy of awards ceremonies. Though we know the Academy Awards are the peak, with the Emmys, Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, Critics Choice Awards and more (and we’ll coyly throw the BAFTAs and BRITs in there, too), it’s hard to keep track of the creme de la creme. Awarding both film and TV achievements, the Golden Globes are unique and heavily attended and discussed – but fall short of both the Academy Awards (film awards) and Emmy Awards (TV awards) in their star power. Indeed, the coveted EGOT achievement shuns the Golden Globes, with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award the real sign of Hollywood power.
Today, much of the Golden Globes’ prestige stems from the fact that the awards are presented first – in January every year – kicking off the new year, and the new awards season, with a bang. With excitement brewing for the season ahead, this means the Golden Globes award ceremony is always a buzzy, prestigious and glamorous affair – and we’re sure 2025 will be no different.
Do The Golden Globes Predict The Oscars?
Because the Golden Globes take place in January every year, many people believe they predict the Oscars, which are awarded in February or March – but this isn’t totally true. The Golden Globes’ list of nominees always bears a resemblance to the Academy Awards’ shortlist, but this is mainly because both award the best performances of the year prior, welcoming plenty of crossover.
With two possible categories to win ‘Best Picture’ in – ‘Drama’ and ‘Musical or Comedy’ – the Golden Globes essentially has two shots at predicting the Oscars’ Best Picture choice. Even then, Best Picture wins are rarely the same across the two ceremonies, with recent exceptions including Moonlight in 2017, The Shape of Water in 2018, Green Book in 2018 and Nomadland in 2021. In 2016, Flavorwire reported that, in the decade prior, the Golden Globes had just a 50 percent record in predicting the winner for Best Picture at the Oscars, and a 40 percent accuracy rating for Best Director. The Best Actor and Best Actress awards, however, are a different story: in the decade up to 2016, the Golden Globes and Oscars lined up on this front 90 percent of the time.
