A new Instagram video highlights the Princess of Wales's long-standing connection with nature

Yesterday, Kate Middleton released a video sharing her deep connection to nature and the solace it has brought her in difficult times. Here’s what we took from it.

Princess Kate Connects With The Wild In New Video

Posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ joint Instagram account, a new video shows the Princess of Wales walking through the Lake District and speaking with Chief Scout Dwayne Fields.

In the clip, Kate Middleton reflects that nature is ‘so meaningful for me as a place to balance and find a sense of peace in what is otherwise a very busy world’. Dwayne echoes her sentiments, emphasising the importance of building that same connection for young people. He states we need to ‘build up a generation who is passionate about our natural spaces and passionate about protecting them as well’.

A Year Of Sanctuary

The video joins a series of appearances in which Kate has highlighted the importance of nature in her life, particularly following her recent battle with cancer. On Mother’s Day this year, she shared a cinematic video of the British countryside, captioned, ‘Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary… Let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognise how our bond with the natural world can nurture our inner selves’.

Kate Middleton’s Roots In The Lakes

Kate’s relationship with the outdoors stems from her childhood, when her family took regular holidays to Coniston water and Windemere in the Lake District.

Their family coat of arms, granted to her father Michael Middleton in 2011 shortly before her marriage to Prince William, even features two thin chevrons symbolising hills and mountains.

After her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, Kate’s younger brother James posted a photo of the siblings together in the Lakes, captioned, ‘Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too’.

James Middleton’s Connection To The Lakes

James himself has openly turned to nature, and specifically the Lake District, as a place of refuge during his struggles with depression. The entrepreneur has spoken candidly about a moment at the height of his mental health struggles when he woke up one morning and drove straight to the snowy Cumbrian mountains.

This morning, James told the London Standard, ‘I went up with the dogs and I had a thermos flask of soup, some cheese and a flapjack’. He recalls, ‘I got to the top and I cried, I shouted; I unleashed so many emotions. And I felt like there was this mountain of mental health struggles, depression and anxiety, that I was finally, maybe, beginning to get to grips with and take control of. I realised there was this potential light at the end of the tunnel.’

This deep-rooted connection to the natural world reflects a longstanding family tradition — one where the Middletons have consistently turned to nature for solace in life’s most difficult moments.
