Looking for a new film to stream? Everyone is talking about Leave The World Behind, Netflix’s brand new movie which landed over the weekend. The level of buzz is reminding us of Don’t Look Up, which was released two Christmases ago – and bears many similarities in plot and ensemble cast. Grab your popcorn: here’s everything you need to know about Leave The World Behind before you tune in.
Leave The World Behind
What Is It About?
Based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name, Leave The World Behind is an apocalyptic psychological thriller with a star-studded cast. It all starts with a spontaneous family vacation to a rented house in Long Island, which is interrupted when a father and daughter purporting to be the property’s owners arrive in the night seeking refuge from a cyber attack in the city. What ensues is an apocalyptic situation that grows from unsettling to terrifying with every minute.
Featuring self-driving cars, phone addicted teens, a reliance on GPS and vaping, it’s a very-contemporary movie, commenting on life as we know it right now – so expect to be unsettled (at a minimum).

Where Was It Filmed?
Leave The World Behind was filmed in Long Island in April 2022, with additional scenes filmed in New York state.
Is The Leave The World Behind House Real?
The Long Island house the Sandford family vacation at is a real property called the ‘Open Corner House’, designed by The Up Studio in 2019. It caught the attention of Netflix’s location scouts, bearing remarkable similarities to the house Rumaan Alam described in his novel. Because it is a private property – designed for a young Long Island family – you cannot visit, and even Netflix didn’t film here entirely. Instead, an exact replica of the house was built on a sound stage for filming, while exterior shots and pool scenes were taken at the real house.
