Plus a brief history of the day
The Lord Mayor’s Show is set to make its grand return to the City in November. Here’s what you need to know about this historic affair.
What Is The Lord Mayor’s Show?
The Lord Mayor’s Show is an annual parade held in the City of London to inaugurate the new Lord Mayor of London. Dating back more than 800 years to 1215, it’s one of the longest-running processions in the world and is held every November (this year, on Saturday 9 November).
What’s The History?
The Lord Mayor’s Show dates back to 1215 when King John granted the City of London the right to elect its own mayor. In exchange, King John required each new mayor swear loyalty to the Crown, meaning he would have to travel from the City to Westminster on horseback – a journey that would later transform into a parade and today’s ‘show’.
A new Lord Mayor is elected every year, and the journey to Westminster was a relatively simple affair until around the 15th century when it had started gaining significance and splendour. As the City grew its wealth, additional ceremonial elements were added to showcase its importance. Eventually, the Lord Mayor started travelling by barge along the River Thames to Westminster, trailed by boats carrying musicians, decorations and entertainers. By the 17th century, the City’s Livery companies were getting involved, showcasing their trades and wealth.
By 1757, it was back to the roads, which were much more developed by this point. This is also the year the Gold State Coach was introduced, which still transports the Lord Mayor to Westminster today. Additional traditions have come and gone across the years, from colonial emphases during the Victorian era to civic pride in the post-war years. Today, the parade still involves the Livery companies, as well as incorporating military elements, ceremonial bands, community group and charities, and ends at the Royal Courts of Justice instead of Westminster.
What Is The Route?
The Lord Mayor’s Show begins at Mansion House, setting off at 11am and proceeding to the Royal Courts via St Pauls. By the early afternoon, the parade returns via Embankment and Victoria Street.
When Is It?
The 2024 Lord Mayor’s Show will commence at 11am on Saturday 9 November.

Who Is The Lord Mayor Of London?
Michael Mainelli is the current Lord Mayor of London, coming to office on 10 November 2023. But his term is almost over: on 9 November 2024, he will be replaced by Alastair King – the City’s 696th Lord Mayor. During his Mayoral year, King will champion his ‘Growth Unleashed’ theme, aiming to maximise the City’s opportunities through responsible risk taking, adoption of technology and celebrating the successes of diverse communities across the UK.
‘It is a tremendous honour to be elected as the 696th Lord Mayor of the City of London,’ King says. ‘London remains the world’s leading financial centre, but global competition is fierce. We have the expertise and talent to thrive, yet we must do more to unlock growth, equip people to innovate, and harness the remarkable dynamic diversity that makes the City exceptional. Growth Unleashed is a commitment to be bolder, think smarter and take our foot off the brake.’
Is It The Same As The Mayor Of London?
No, the Lord Mayor and the Mayor of London are not the same. The Lord Mayor is an elected civic position in the City of London, representing, supporting and promoting the businesses and residents within the old City, and championing the UK-based financial sector. The Mayor of London, in contrast, is a political office, elected by the residents of Greater London, and controlling a financial budget to meet their interests. The current Mayor of London is Sadiq Khan, who has held the post since 2016.
