Review: Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo

A line of Maserati GranTurismo Trofeos

J-TP – Hang on, this is a thirsty petrol supercar rather than an eco-friendly model. What’s your thinking?

JT – Correct, but Maserati is about to launch an all-electric version of the GranTurismo, too. This Trofeo model is so awesome I thought we’d whet the appetite. The forthcoming Foglore is powered by batteries, boasts three motors and will accelerate to 62mph in just 2.7 seconds!

I note it will cost around £180,000 too!

Well, there is that price of course, but what a stunning looking machine. The Trofeo version we drove is remarkably similar to the old Maserati GranTurismo, a car so cute it survived 15 years without a major facelift.

Yes, that long, low-slung bonnet and those bulging haunches – this is a GT that screams performance.

There are actually two, V6 petrol GranTurismos, starting with the entry-level Modena producing 483bhp. We drove the more aggressive, 542bhp Trofeo. Both offer all-wheel drive for extra traction, the latter accelerating to 62mph in just 3.3 seconds.

Prices?

Neither are cheap. The Modena is from £133,000 and the Trofeo costs £163,000.

The interior of the car

Ouch!

While the V6 doesn’t sound quite as throaty as the previous V8 GranTurismos, the automatic Trofeo is especially engaging to drive, particularly in Sport or Corsa mode. On longer journeys, the Maserati the munches miles in Comfort setting and is a truly a wonderful place to travel.

Well, that bodes well for the electric Foglore version.

Best of all, the cabin is vastly superior to the previous, outdated model. Luxuriously crafted, there’s a state-of-the-art infotainment system and 12.2-inch digital dashboard. Relax in supremely comfortable, well-shaped seats, while there’s enough space in the rear for two adults.

Maserati claim a battery range of up to 280 miles for the Foglore electric, which isn’t really enough for an epic grand tour across continents?

Perhaps, but 750bhp is the stuff of supercars and, despite the hefty price, there’s very little to complete with this electric coupe.

OK, I’m convinced! Let’s drive the Foglore when it arrives in the UK.

I’m already in the queue. More practical than a Porsche 911, equally as stylish as the Bentley Continental GT and cheaper than the latest Aston Martin DB12, the petrol GranTurismo is the best Maserati I’ve ever driven. I can’t wait for the electric.
