Prince William’s Charity To Be Subject Of A New Documentary About Homelessness

Last year, Prince William launched Homewards, a five-year project drawing experts together with the aim of eradicating homelessness entirely – the next step in his long-term advocacy for the issue. Now the Prince of Wales’ efforts are set to be the subject of a new two-part documentary on ITV. Here’s everything we know so far about the documentary, which has the working title Prince William: We Can End Homelessness.

It has been a year since Prince William launched Homewards with The Royal Foundation, a five-year project bringing together individuals and organisations to mastermind bespoke homelessness solutions across six key UK locations: 

• Aberdeen
• Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole
• Newport
• Northern Ireland
• Sheffield
• The London borough of Lambeth

The project’s first year has been documented by the team at ITV, giving a glimpse into the work of the future monarch as he grapples to conquer homelessness in the UK entirely. Advocates of Homewards include the likes of Gail Porter, Geri Halliwell Horner, Tyrone Mings, and David Duke MBE, the founder Street Soccer Scotland and Street Soccer London.

‘We know that television has the power to change hearts and minds,’ says Amanda Berry OBE, CEO of The Royal Foundation. ‘Homelessness can seem like it is hard to prevent but by sharing the realities of people’s experiences and those who are coming together to support them, we can inspire action. This two-part documentary will help raise vital awareness and demonstrate that, by working together, it is possible to end homelessness.’

Over two hour-long episodes, We Can End Homelessness will feature a number of well-known advocates and leading projects, as well as delving into the journeys of people currently facing homelessness or who have previously been homeless. Homewards estimates there are currently 300,000 people in the UK without a home.

‘Over the next five years, I believe that we have a unique opportunity to develop innovative new solutions and scale tangible impact,’ the Prince of Wales said when Homewards was first launched. ‘This will inspire belief throughout the UK – and beyond – that homelessness can be ended for good.’

‘Over the past year, we have spent time following Prince William and The Royal Foundation through the first year of the Homewards programme,’ says Leo Burley, director of We Can End Homelessness. ‘We’ve heard some incredibly moving stories from people across the country facing homelessness. Everyone we’ve filmed with has welcomed the spotlight that Prince William and Homewards are placing on the UK’s homelessness crisis.’

We are told Prince William: We Can End Homelessness will air on ITV1 and ITVX this autumn.
