Did Nick Mohammed Just Tease Ted Lasso Season 4?

Ted Lasso had quite an intense and surprising impact on British football, namely by introducing a swathe of Americans to the sport. (Were actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney inspired by the series to purchase Wrexham A.F.C.? We will never know for sure…) And now, a visit to London’s quaint Richmond always involves bumping into a few Ted Lasso fans seeking to visit their favourite filming locations from the show. With season 3 concluding in 2023, there’s just one question on our lips: will there be a Ted Lasso season 4?

Will There Be A Ted Lasso Season 4?

Sadly it’s not looking like there will be a Ted Lasso season 4. The plan from the start was to create a three-season show, and this promise was delivered when the finale neatly tied up everyone’s storylines. As Jason Sudeikis commented: ‘This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious […] is flattering.’

Committed Ted Lasso fans are in a frenzy, and it’s all down to one evocative emoji used by Nick Mohammed (who plays Nate Shelley) while promoting the Ted Lasso DVD box set. ‘“The Complete Series”,’ he wrote using quotation marks and a winky face emoji to hint all is not as it seems. So, perhaps Ted Lasso isn’t ‘complete’, after all.

On the possibility of a Ted Lasso season 4, Sudeikis previously commented: ‘It’s up to more factors than myself. The response has been overwhelming. We have a tremendous group of writers, actors, people in production and post-production, all of those thrown in the jambalaya of possibility. I couldn’t say yes or no. I know this part of the show is what it’s supposed to be.’

However, this does not rule out the possibility of a spin off. Indeed, Ted Lasso’s director and supervising producer Declan Lowney told The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Everybody knew [Ted Lasso season 3] was the end, but it’s also the end for now. It’s going to be two or three years before anything happens – if anything happens.’

On continuing to flesh out the Ted Lasso universe, Sudeikis said: ‘I think we have a talented enough writing staff, an incredible cast, tremendous production and post-production crew. They definitely have the ability and there’s plenty of water left in that sponge to squeeze out.’

The season 3 finale saw Ted (Jason Sudeikis) return to the US to be closer to his son (and to coach his soccer team). So, while we can imagine a reboot, after all of Ted’s struggles with his mental health, it makes more sense that the creators will leave his story as is. That said, with Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) filling Ted’s shoes, perhaps Ted Lasso season 4 would focus on his experiences as the new head coach of Richmond AFC – which would probably constitute a spin-off, anyway.

When Would It Be Released?

If Ted Lasso season 4 does happen, it will not be released until 2025 at the very earliest if we take heed of Lowney’s comments who, in 2023, said it would be ‘two or three years before anything happens – if anything happens.’
