Here’s what you need to know
Audiences were captivated by Channel 4’s twisty romance thriller, The Couple Next Door, led by a starry quartet: Sam Heughan, Eleanor Tomlinson, Alfred Enoch and Jessica De Gouw. But what on Earth could happen next after that ending? We’ve got the details.
Will There Be The Couple Next Door Season 2?
Yes, Channel 4 has confirmed The Couple Next Door season 2 is on the way – but only Hugh Dennis will return. A new quartet will star at the fore, telling a brand new story: Sam Palladio, Annabel Scholey, Aggy K Adams and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
When it launched this time last year (November 2023), The Couple Next Door was Channel 4’s biggest scripted streaming launch ever, with episode one racking up more than one million streams in the first seven days – so a reprise makes total sense.
‘More sexy shenanigans in suburbia this time with a provocative psychological twist, the addictive global hit thriller The Couple Next Door is back, with a new set of neighbours each hiding dark secrets of their own,’ summarises Jo McGrath, executive producer for Eagle Eye Drama, the company behind the series. Written by David Allison and directed by Dries Vos, here’s what to expect.
What Will Happen?
We have new protagonists, but the vibes are the same: the claustrophobic world of the suburban cul-de-sac, starring frustrated married couples infected with ennui. At the centre is a bustling hospital, where brilliant heart surgeon Charlotte Roberts (Scholey) and her husband, consultant anaesthetist Jacob (Palladio) both work. But things soon go awry for this high-flying couple when their mysterious new hospital colleague Mia (Adams) rents the house next door.
Easing herself way into Charlotte and Jacob’s confidence – and eventually their bed – Mia also quickly befriends cul-de-sac outcast Alan (Dennis). Meanwhile, Charlotte has to handle the reappearance of past flame Leo (Ramamurthy).
Soon, Mia’s past comes back to haunt her – but by this time, Charlotte and Jacob are totally wrapped up in her life. They begin to question who she really is, especially when hospital patients start mysteriously dying…
‘I am delighted to be joining the brilliant team behind Channel 4’s The Couple Next Door,’ Scholey shared on the news. ‘I was a big fan of series one and I am excited to be delving into David Allison’s gripping new script with a hugely talented cast and crew, whilst going back to my West Yorkshire roots, as heart surgeon Charlotte Roberts.’
What Is It Based On?
Season 1 was based on a Dutch series called The Neighbours, and season 2 of The Couple Next Door will similarly be loosely based on Danish drama Fatal Injections (aka Dopamine) – which is coincidentally available to stream on Channel 4 if you’d like to get ahead.
The Cast
- Annabel Scholey as Charlotte Roberts
- Sam Palladio as Jacob Roberts
- Aggy K Adams as Mia
- Sendhil Ramamurthy as Leo
- Hugh Dennis as Alan
‘I’m thrilled to join the amazing team at The Couple Next Door,’ Palladio shares. ‘I was drawn to the project through its brilliant writing and challenging characters, and to step into the world of the show which is already loved by fans and bring Jacob to life is really exciting. Having lived in the US since shooting Nashville, it’ll be great to be back on British screens and to explore a troubled and complex character, which is unlike anything I’ve done before.’
Where Will It Be Filmed?
Like season 1, The Couple Next Door season 2 will be filmed in Belgium – hence the unplaceable picture-perfect suburbia setting.
Release Date
No news just yet on a release date. Channel 4 says these details ‘will be announced in due course’. We expect an autumn/winter 2025 debut. Stay tuned.
