It’s looking likely…

It’s official: Disney is developing a sequel to the 2006 cult and commercial classic film (it smashed the box office earning $326.7 million worldwide, earning Meryl Streep a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy and an Oscar nomination), The Devil Wears Prada. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Devil Wears Prada: A Sequel Is Coming

Often cited as a favourite film, especially among fashion lovers, The Devil Wears Prada is a seminal classic based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name. Starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci and more, a sequel has always been in high demand, but our prayers are yet to be answered. Until now: with the original screenwriter for the 2006 film, Aline Brosh McKenna, back on the books, and Disney fully committing to the project a sequel is looking more likely than ever.

The news comes just as a musical adaptation of the film gears up to debut on London’s West End, featuring an original score by Elton John and starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly, Georgie Buckland as Andy, Amy Di Bartolomeo as Emily and Matt Henry as Stanley Tucci’s character, Nigel. It will open at the Dominion Theatre in October 2024.

What Will Happen?

In 2013, Weisberger released a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada entitled Revenge Wears Prada, set a decade after the events of the first book. In it, Andy is the editor for a bridal magazine called The Plunge, which she launched with former nemesis, Miranda’s first assistant Emily Charlton. As Andy plans her own wedding, she remains haunted by her short but impactful experience working for Miranda Priestly – until the two meet again. The Plunge is doing so well that it attracts the interest of Elias-Clarke, the publishing company that owns Runway. Enter Miranda, who begins courting Andy and Emily – a total contrast to her poor treatment of the duo 10 years ago – in an attempt to persuade them to sell the magazine to Elias-Clarke.

So, will this be the plot of the second film? It’s possible. Most of the details for the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada are being kept under wraps, but reports suggest the film will centre on Miranda, not Andy, who is navigating her career amid the dramatic decline in traditional print publishing. Meanwhile, Emily is a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising money Miranda desperately needs. The sequel could take some cues from the book, then, but it seems writer Aline Brosh McKenna will be taking it in a different direction.

Will Anne Hathaway Star?

No news just yet on whether The Devil Wears Prada’s protagonist, Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, will return for the sequel – but our fingers are firmly crossed.

Meryl Streep Will Return As Miranda Priestly

The Devil Wears Prada’s shiniest star Meryl Streep has officially signed on for the sequel, reprising her role as Runway magazine’s high-powered fashion editor with a withering glare, Miranda Priestly. In the first film, protagonist Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) work as Miranda’s harried assistants, eventually prompting Andie to dramatically quit her role with a flashy backdrop of Paris. If recent reports are anything to go by, it seems Miranda will be taking the spotlight in the sequel.

Emily Blunt Will Return As Emily Charlton

The Devil Wears Prada’s breakout star was Emily Blunt who starred as Miranda Priestly’s first assistant, Emily Charlton – and she’s back for the sequel. With no news just yet about Anne Hathway’s return, it’s seeming more and more likely that The Plunge won’t exist in the movie universe, and instead Miranda and Emily will be going head to head. The sequel could also draw some plot points from Weisberger’s second follow-up novel, When Life Gives You Lululemons (2018), which centres on Emily’s life in the Connecticut suburbs with two high powered NYC friends.

‘We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie,’ Blunt recently said to Hathaway during the duo’s Actors on Actors with Variety. ‘I don’t know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life.’

Is It Based On A True Story?

It is widely acknowledged that Miranda Priestly is supposed to be Anna Wintour and The Devil Wears Prada encapsulates author Lauren Weisberger’s experience working at Vogue for 10 months in the ‘90s. Whether this is a true or accurate portrayal of her time at the magazine is another matter. Indeed, while the novel stormed the bestseller list, Vogue was critical, with Kate Betts writing in The New York Times that ‘Andrea [the protagonist, based on Lauren] is just as much a snob as the snobs she is thrown in with’.

Release Date

No news just yet on when The Devil Wears Prada sequel will be released, but our fingers are crossed for a date towards the end of 2025.
