We're just a few months away from one of the biggest nights in showbiz

It’s been another huge year for the film world, with mega hits like Barbie and Oppenheimer stealing the show alongside a flurry of buzzy new independents. Yet Hollywood has also been affected by the actors’ and writers’ strikes, which have caused delays and cancellations within the industry, plus many movies have been underperforming due to lack of promotion. Luckily, the Oscars was able to go ahead as planned on 10 March 2024, with plenty of viral moments to get us talking, from pregnancy announcements to award-winning blunders to breakout performances. But which films struck gold? Here’s all of the top line info from the 96th Academy Awards, including the full list of winners and the nominees that missed out.

The Oscars 2024

What Happened At The Oscars 2024?

It was another jam-packed ceremony at the 2024 Oscars, featuring a slew of awards for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (including Best Director and the biggest award of the evening, Best Picture), a naked John Cena and a wardrobe malfunction from Emma Stone as she humbly accepted her career second Academy Award: Best Actress for Poor Things.

American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel hosted the event, making headline grabbing jibes towards the likes of Robert Downey Jr (who bagged his first ever Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Oppenheimer) and Donald Trump. Various stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Mahershala Ali and Jennifer Lawrence presented awards throughout the night, but it was Al Pacino who was tasked with announcing the winner of the night’s most prestigious award, Best Picture – only to muck it up. What went wrong? He forgot to list the 10 nominees, skipping straight to announcing the winner: Oppenheimer. It caused a bit of a panicked fumble amid production, but dare we say we liked the conciseness?

Elsewhere, the battle of Barbenheimer continued, but was Barbie even a worthy opponent? Clearly not: Oppenheimer bagged a whopping seven Oscars, with Barbie only snagging Best Original Song for Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’. That said, Ryan Gosling’s Ken certainly stole the show with an all-singing all-dancing performance of his hit comedy song, ‘I’m Just Ken’. A whopping 65 suited and booted Kens joined Gosling on stage, including Barbie co-stars Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Ncuti Gatwa and emulating Marilyn Monroe’s iconic performance of ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ in Gentleman Prefer Blondes (1953), with Gosling in a pink suit surrounded by black-suited men.

Meanwhile, Eilish performed ‘What Was I Made For?’ with brother FINNEAS to a standing ovation. She is the youngest artist ever to win both the Grammy for Song of the Year and the Oscar for Best Original Song in the same year; she is the first artist to do it since Celine Dion won both prizes in 1998 with her Titanic song, ‘My Heart Will Go On’.

Last but not least, naked John Cena. The former WWE wrestler waddled onto the stage with nothing but the Costume Designer award envelope covering his lower half. Why? It was a meta reference to the 1974 Academy Awards, when a streaker darted across the stage. But most important of all was, of course, the winners of these very prestigious awards. Here they are in full.

Who Was The Host?

Jimmy Kimmel returned as the host of the 2024 Oscars. It was his fourth time fronting the show, so he’s already well-versed in managing unforeseen situations, such as the chaotic sequence of events in 2017 which saw La La Land wrongly named best picture over the actual winner, Moonlight.

‘I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,’ Kimmel said in a statement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.
