Palm Royale

This new sun-soaked comedy is earmarked for fans of The White Lotus – but it’s not just a wannabe series. Led by Kristen Wiig, Palm Royale is loosely based on Mr and Mrs American Pie, a novel by Juliet McDaniel that delves into the social hierarchies of 1960s Palm Beach. We follow Maxine Simmons (Wiig), a woman grappling to enter the inner circle – and she starts by joining the Palm Royale Country Club…

Binge watch Hijack during Twixmas

Idris Elba in “Hijack,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Hijack

This high octane thriller is told in real time, with eight stressful hour-long episodes telling the story of an eight-hour flight hijacked by terrorists. Led by Sam (Idris Elba), a passenger on said plane, we watch as the terrified passengers fight for their lives, while the gang of gun-wielding criminals try and maintain a sense of calm and order. Meanwhile, people on the ground notice things are a bit fishy with the plane’s communication. Will the passengers land safely and return home? You’ll have to binge it to find out.

Brendan Hunt and Jason Sudeikis in “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Ted Lasso

One of the main shows that really shot Apple TV into streaming success is Ted Lasso. With such a broad and dedicated viewership, this football comedy has gotten thousands of Americans obsessed with football (not American football, real football), and perhaps even inspired Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to purchase Wrexham AFC. The show itself follows the titular Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an American college football coach (the wrong type of football, that is) who is bizarrely hired by the fictional Richmond AFC’s new owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), who acquired the team after divorcing her wealthy husband Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head). With hopes of destroying the team to spite her ex-husband, little does he know, Rebecca hired Ted to run the team into the ground. But Ted’s spritely optimism might have other consequences.

Silo

This post-apocalyptic mystery series is set in a vast underground ‘silo’ that houses the last remnants of society after the world above ground became uninhabitable. We primarily follow Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson), a mechanic who accidentally uncovers a conspiracy, and begins to question the true nature of the silo residents’ isolated existence. Is the world outside truly uninhabitable? And, if it isn’t, why would the silo’s leaders lie about it?

The Morning Show

Ever fancied going behind the scenes of your favourite breakfast television show? The Morning Show does just that, delving into the newsrooms, the presenters’ personal lives, showcasing personal assistants and examining the power structures that govern what we see on TV. Naturally, it’s not all plain sailing, and the show kicks off in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct being lodged against the show’s male co-anchor. What ensues is a whirlwind he-said, she-said that reimagines the #MeToo drama with flair, starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell and Billy Crudup.

Austin Butler and Callum Turner in Masters of the Air

Masters Of The Air

A decade in the making, Masters of the Air is a star-studded WW2 miniseries, with Barry Keoghan, Austin Butler and Ncuti Gatwa leading the way as American fighter pilots. Based on Donald L Miller’s 2007 book of the same name, their three characters are part of the 100th Bomb Group, an American air unit who put their lives on the line to help dismantle Hitler’s Third Reich. The group is also known as the Bloody Hundredth, a grim nickname earned from its sky-high casualty rate. Expect an emotionally intense and harrowing yet visually stunning watch.

Severance

This dark psychological thriller speculates on the future of the workplace, with a mysterious company called Lumon Industries offering its employees a ‘severance’ procedure, which separates their work memories from their personal memories. Our protagonist Mark (Adam Scott) opts to undergo the procedure after the death of his wife, as he is struggling to manage his grief, joining fellow severed colleagues Irving (John Turturro) and Dylan (Zach Cherry). Perfect for fans of Black Mirror, Severance raises lots of eerie questions about our society’s near future.

Slow Horses, Apple TV

Slow Horses

Apple TV isn’t all American series: Slow Horses is a British spy thriller, adapting Mick Herron’s Slough House series of novels. Spinning the typical spy thriller on its head, we follow a team of MI5 agents who have been exiled to Slough House, an administrative purgatory for incompetent spies, who are derogatively nicknamed the ‘slow horses’. We follow River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), a talented spy sent to Slough House after a training exercise mistake. There, he meets head of house Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and is pulled into investigating dangerous schemes that threaten the nation.

The sisters are played by Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson, who have been praised for their ensemble performances as witty, supportive and complex sisters.

The Buccaneers

Bridgerton fan wondering what’s on Apple TV? Look no further than The Buccaneers, an eight episode series delving into New York’s Gilded Age. We follow a group of friends – daughters of America’s newly rich – who travel to London with the aim of securing marriages to dashing aristocrats. What ensues is an Anglo-American culture clash as the girls refute long-held British traditions and live as their boisterous selves.
