Honey Deuce: How To Make The US Open’s Viral Cocktail

The fruity drink has gone viral

At the Wimbledon Championships, no day is complete without a glass of Pimm’s. But at the US Open, it’s all about the Honey Deuce cocktail, a beloved drink that has now become synonymous with the tennis event. During this year’s tournament, over two million cups of the cocktail were sold, bringing in an estimated $10 million in sales. So what’s behind the hype – and how can we create our own version this side of the pond?

What Is The Honey Deuce Cocktail?

The cocktail was first created in 2007 by a former Grey Goose ambassador and restaurateur Nick Mautone. Grey Goose was in its second year of sponsoring the tournament, and was looking for a buzzy new drink which could be easily served at a busy sporting event. Mautone was shopping at a farmer’s market and spotted a honeydew melon, which triggered an idea for a drink – and so the Honey Deuce was born (the name being a nod to the tennis term referring to a game being tied at 40-40).

Served in a collectible, acrylic cup, the drink is a mix of Grey Goose vodka, lemonade and a splash of Chambord raspberry liqueur, garnished with three pieces of honeydew resembling tennis balls. Over the years it has soared in popularity – so much so that there are now dedicated ‘Honey Deuce Express’ bars dotted around the event. Despite its steep price ($23 this year), it’s more successful than ever, which the Grey Goose team are capitalising on with cocktail-inspired merchandise.

The tennis stars themselves are fans too. Six-time US Open champion Serena Williams tried the Honey Deuce for the first time this year, which she shared via a TikTok video, saying: ‘Honey, that’s not deuce. That’s called Honey, ad-in, or Honey ace. Let’s rename it!’ A number of celebrities were also spotted sipping the rose-coloured cocktail at this year’s event, including Jason Sudeikis and James Corden.
