Lannan: What’s The Hype Around This Edinburgh Bakery?

People are queuing for hours to get their hands on these viral croissants

Edinburgh is filled with great bakeries, but one is proving particularly popular right now. We’re of course talking about Lannan Bakery, the latest spot to go viral on TikTok, which has had queues snaking down the street since it opened in summer 2023. On weekends, you can expect to wait for an hour or more to get your hands on one of its famous pastries – but will it be worth it? Here’s everything you need to know about Scotland’s most famous bakery.

What To Expect At Lannan Bakery

Located in Stockbridge, Lannan Bakery is headed up by Darcie Maher, who grew up in the Scottish borders. She taught herself to bake by reading about pastry, going on to hone her craft at bakeries and restaurants across the country, before joining esteemed spot The Palmerston in Edinburgh in 2021, where she developed a following. Then, in 2023, Maher struck out on her own, launching Lannan, a bakery which derives its name from the Scottish Gaelic for ‘house’.

Interiors come courtesy of Maher, Nicholas Taggart RIBA and Ossian Architects, who aimed to create a classic, understated aesthetic – think timber panelling, brass metalwork and natural materials.

What’s On The Menu?

The crucial question: what’s everyone queuing up for? A quick glance on Instagram or TikTok will give you a feel for the mouth-watering pastries that are up for grabs here. Everything is characterised by a picture-perfect, laminated look – Maher’s pastries are works of art.

First up are the famous croissants, which are meticulously crafted, folded and rolled, and usually sell out before 9am. Then come the cakes: think glistening iced buns, exquisite crème brûlée danishes, brown butter banana bread, custard slices topped with bright icing and much more. Watch out for seasonal specials too, like the recent rhubarb and pistachio Danish, or the Amalfi lemon tart.

It’s not only about the sweet stuff though. There are also savoury pastries aplenty: an elevated sausage roll made from Merguez sausage, braised fennel and Monte Enebro cheese, for instance, and a baguette filled with smoked ham hough, Mull Cheddar and English mustard. The coffee is also excellent, and everything is available for takeaway.
