Michelin has revealed its new Bib Gourmands for 2024
The Michelin Guide isn’t only there to highlight the most expensive fine dining restaurants. Its second tier of award, the Michelin Bib Gourmand, was introduced to spotlight great food that is slightly more affordable than the usual Michelin-starred fare. The 2024 recipients have just been revealed, with a whole host of restaurants across Great Britain and Ireland boasting the coveted accolade.
Michelin’s Bib Gourmand Restaurants For 2024
What Is A Michelin Bib Gourmand?
Created by the Michelin Guide in 1997, the Michelin Bib Gourmand is granted to restaurants which offer excellent cooking at a reasonable price. As Michelin puts it: ‘Not quite a star, but most definitely not a consolation prize, the Bib Gourmand – named after Bibendum, the friendly Michelin Man and the official company mascot for the Michelin Group – is a just-as-esteemed rating that recognizes friendly establishments that serve good food at moderate prices.’
There’s no set formula, as such. Michelin adds: ‘The price limit for Bib Gourmand consideration varies from country to country, depending on the cost of living, but the inspectors are searching for the same high quality, wherever they happen to be in the world.’ Bib Gourmand restaurants do, however, tend to share a simple, approachable style of cooking.
New Michelin Bib Gourmand Recipients For 2024: Great Britain and Ireland
A total of 21 restaurants were awarded Michelin Bib Gourmands in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2024. That includes two London names: Empire Empire, a fairly new Indian restaurant in Notting Hill, and Les 2 Garçons, a neighbourhood restaurant in Crouch End. Elsewhere in the country, Cotswolds pub-with-rooms The Bull in Charlbury secured the accolade, alongside Adam Handling’s Windsor pub The Loch & The Tyne, and Manchester bistro Higher Ground.
There was just one new recipient in Scotland: Tipo in Edinburgh, the latest launch from chef Stuart Ralston, who also runs Noto and Aizle.
Dublin also put on a strong showing, with three eateries in the city awarded with Bib Gourmands: wine bar and small plates spot Amy Auston, Spanish restaurant La Gordita, and neighbouhood hotspot Lottie’s.
