Sweet and simple, we can see why the internet loves this tasty treat

Craving something sweet? When the Dairy Milk just doesn’t cut it anymore, level up your snack time with a slab of chocolate bark – aka, TikTok‘s confectionary of the moment, with over 103.3 million posts tagged under #chocolatebark.

What Is Chocolate Bark?

Made by spreading melted chocolate into a thin layer and adding various sweet toppings, chocolate bark is a DIY confectionary that is often given as a homemade gift to friends and family. Named after its rustic appearance, this tasty treat is usually broken into irregular pieces – resembling tree bark – and eaten as shards of bark.

While a popular treat at Christmas, when the topping of choice is peppermint, gingerbread or orange, chocolate bark is having a moment this summer – and we can see why. This cold snack is perfect for cooling down with; you can top yours with freeze-dried fruits, or even serve it roughly crumbled over ice cream.

What Toppings Can You Choose?

It’s really up to you which toppings you choose for your chocolate bark – although we’d personally steer clear of the salty spicy potato chip chocolate bark currently doing the rounds on TikTok. Some of the more common confectionaries that get piled on include:

  • Nuts, in particular almonds, pecans and pistachios
  • Dried fruits, like cranberries, cherries, strawberries, raspberries and apricots
  • Candy pieces (peppermint is especially popular at Christmas)
  • Pretzels
  • Cookies

Recipe: Chocolate Bark

Fancy trying your hand at chocolate bark? We’ve put together an easy (and easily customisable) recipe below:

Ingredients

  • 6 bars of chocolate (or enough to line your chosen baking sheet) – either milk, dark or white, or a combination
  • Toppings of choice

Method

  1. Place all your chocolate on a lined baking sheet, making sure the slabs are laid flat and touching.
  2. Put the tray in the oven (heated to 175°C) and leave in there for around five minutes, or until lightly melted.
  3. Remove the tray with the chocolate from the oven. If using different colour chocolates, you can use either a wooden kebab stick or the end of a fork or spoon to create a marble effect; draw lines with your utensil in vertical lines, followed by horizontal lines. If using just the one type of chocolate, you can simply spread the melted chocolate across the tray to mix everything together.
  4. Add all of your chosen toppings while the chocolate is still soft.
  5. Allow the chocolate bark to cool and harden by popping it in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  6. Break the bark into pieces, and enjoy.
