What Is Savoury Trifle?
As the name implies, a savoury trifle is a new spin on the classic English dessert – using foods that are more commonly considered savoury rather sweet. From what we’ve gathered, the layers are entirely your choice and can be themed around specific dinner ideas and meals. Think nacho stacks, pasta layers, potato salads and even roast dinners, with all the singular components scooped into a big glass dish in visible layers.

The burgeoning food trend is currently lurking in the corners of TikTok, where searches for ‘savory trifle’ have surpassed 195 million views. Here, creators try their hand at making their own version of savoury trifle – while others look on in equal parts intrigue, confusion and (at times) disgust.
It’s also difficult not to think of THAT iconic Friends moment – you know, the one with the meat-custard trifle – where Rachel attempts to make the classic dessert but mixes up the recipes to create a Frankenstein-approved amalgamation of trifle and shepherd’s pie. That too has had a resurgence online following the rise of savoury trifle.

Recipe: Potato Salad Savoury Trifle
We’ve combed through some of TikTok’s (more appealing) savoury trifles to make our own ultimate recipe and have taken a leaf out of creator Sam Camilleri‘s book – and now, we pose you the challenge of making this one at home. Enjoy!
Serves 6
Ingredients
- 1kg of Charlotte potatoes
- 6 rashers of bacon (smoked or unsmoked)
- 2 spring onions, finely chopped
For the dressing
- 2 tsp of wholegrain mustard
- 2 tbsp of white wine vinegar
- 1 shallot, finely chopped
For the sauce
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp soured cream
- 1 tbsp of horseradish sauce
Method
- Cook the potatoes: Put your potatoes in a large pan with cold salt water, then bring to the boil on the hob. Cook for 10 mins until tender. If you want a slightly crispier potato, you can roast them in the oven for around 40 minutes to an hour at 200°C or in the air fryer for 10 minutes at 200°C. Leave the potatoes to cool completely when done.
- Make the dressing: Whisk the mustard, vinegar, olive oil and chopped shallot together and season with salt and pepper, then set aside.
- Make the sauce: Mix the mayonnaise, soured cream, lemon juice and horseradish together, then set aside.
- Cook the bacon: Cook your bacon rashers in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes at 175°C, or in the air fryer for six to 10 minutes at 200ºC.
- Build the savoury trifle: In a large glass dish, layer the components of your trifle together. Start with the potatoes, then the dressing (making sure the potatoes are evenly coated) and sauce. Top with the bacon, crumbled up, and the chopped spring onions. Tuck in and enjoy.
