Here's how to make the trending dish

As the days get chillier, we’re all on the hunt for warming, comforting recipes to see us through to Christmas. And this December, TikTokers have gone wild for one dish in particular: a garlicky, creamy Turkish pasta made with spiced, minced meat and topped with yoghurt, also known as kiymali garavolli. Keen to give it a try? Good news: it’s pretty straightforward to make, and can be whipped up in just 15 minutes.

Who Created The Viral Turkish Pasta Dish?

The Turkish pasta recipe everyone’s talking about right now comes from Australian influencer Anna Paul – although it was actually created by her mother. She first posted about it back in November, and the video quickly went viral, amassing over 17 million views, with many dubbing it the best pasta they’ve ever eaten. In the initial clip, Anna says: ‘This is mama’s Turkish pasta and I’m going to show you how to make it because it’s really, really easy.’ She adds: ‘This whole meal only takes as long as it takes pasta to cook.’

The dish is inspired by a traditional Turkish dish called manti, a type of dumpling which sees seasoned meat wrapped in pasta – many of the same flavours are used, but it’s a lot easier to make. Anna’s recipe doesn’t contain specific ingredients, as her mother cooks ‘by eye’, but here’s a general guide on how to recreate the dish at home.

How To Make Turkish Pasta

Ingredients:

  • Minced meat – this could be lamb or beef
  • Curry powder
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Onion powder
  • Onion, diced
  • Garlic
  • Butter
  • Paprika
  • Pasta
  • Greek yoghurt
  • Tomatoes
  • Parsley

Method:

  1. Start braising the meat in a pan and add a tiny bit of curry powder. No need to add oil, says Anna’s mum, as the meat has its own.
  2. Add the spices: black pepper, onion powder, paprika and salt. Cook for a few more minutes, then add the chopped onions.
  3. While that’s cooking, get a pot of Greek yoghurt and add salt and crushed garlic within the container.
  4. Make the butter sauce by melting butter in a pan and adding paprika.
  5. Cook your pasta as instructed on the packet. Anna’s recipe uses farfalle but other varieties would work too.
  6. Put the pasta in a bowl and add the yoghurt. Top with the meat and the butter sauce.
  7. Add fresh tomatoes and parsley.

TIP: The recipe could also be made vegetarian by swapping the meat for lentils.
