Beachy bathrooms for the win
Tropical decor might be having a moment in the world of interior design, but if you really want to make your home feel like an island paradise, doesn’t it all come down to the bathroom? Here’s everything you need to know about the oh-so-Zen Balinese bathroom trend.
Balinese Interior Design: How To Create A Bali Bathroom
In need of some R&R? Hopping on a flight to a tropical paradise may feel like a bit of a stretch, but the next best thing is, of course, to bring that tropical paradise to your door – or into your bathroom, to be exact. While you won’t find outdoor showers and ocean views in many UK homes, there are plenty of ways to make your space feel more serene. This is where the Balinese aesthetic comes in.
So, what defines Balinese interior design? As Mike Whitfield, luxury interior expert at LUSSO, explains: ‘It’s a style that beautifully marries the rich cultural heritage of Bali with sleek, contemporary aesthetics, creating spaces that are both serene and modern. This unique blend offers a retreat-like ambience, making it perfect for those looking to infuse their homes with tranquillity.’
Naturally, there’s no better place to infuse some tranquility than in your bathroom. The Balinese bathroom trend is all about warm colours, natural materials and high-end finishes, all of which come together to create a minimalistic and yet sophisticated space. Here are Mike’s tips on how to get the look.
Start With A Warm Colour Palette
Don’t be afraid to ditch the white colour scheme – choosing deeper shades better reflects the natural landscape, after all. ‘Earthy tones such as browns, greens and terracotta create a more grounding atmosphere’ Mike explains. For a particularly sophisticated look, opt for ‘a freestanding bath in deep natural tones such as charcoal, complemented by light neutral stone tiles to add brightness to the room.’
Incorporate Rustic Textures
‘Textures are the key ingredient in crafting the perfect Balinese-inspired space,’ Mike notes. ‘I recommend including wooden decor to achieve a rustic appearance, combined with stone countertop basins – especially those with deep, curved designs – to truly capture the essence of Balinese luxury.’ To further bring the outside in, he recommends ‘utilising natural materials such as bamboo, rattan, and greenery.’
Focus On Minimalism
‘Adding too much to a space can make it feel cluttered, which contradicts the open living concept of Balinese design,’ says Mike – so minimalism is key. ‘Allow your bathroom to come to life through tiles, colours and decor, before enhancing your scheme with simple accessories such as plants and flowers.’
Upgrade Your Fixtures
‘As well as a soothing soak in the bath, a spa-like shower experience is essential,’ Mike reflects. ‘I recommend incorporating a high-powered thermostatic shower and a rainfall showerhead to deliver the ultimate spa experience. Enhance this with plush towels and soft robes for ultimate comfort after a relaxing shower or soak.’
