Big news: clutter is trending
Another day, another questionable internet trend. If you’re still on the fence about fridgescaping, allow us to introduce you to TikTok’s latest wacky obsession: the ‘frazzled English woman’ aesthetic, which has now entered the world of interiors. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is The ‘Frazzled English Woman’ Interiors Aesthetic?
If mismatched furniture, cluttered corners and a general sense of chaos could be deemed an interior design trend, surely we’d all call ourselves experts – but this is, in fact, TikTok’s latest trend. Finally, we can begin to sing the praises of the laid-back, lived-in space: or at least that’s what the ‘frazzled English woman’ look seems to celebrate.
Firmly romanticising the charmingly messy look at the core of noughties rom-coms like Bridget Jones, this slightly puzzling trend appears to have ties to much-loved aesthetics like cottagecore and whimsical decor.
But what actually is it? According to the experts at Plank Hardware, the frazzled English woman aesthetic is ‘rooted in cosy chaos and an effortless, lived-in vibe.’ Although it began in the fashion world (think oversized cable-knit jumpers, chunky scarves, fingerless gloves and messy updos), it’s now creeping into interiors, suggesting that ‘what started as a viral fashion trend is now influencing the way we style our living spaces.’
The basis of the frazzled interiors look is a sense of rustic charm, mixing aspects of cottagecore ‘with modern elements for a warm and inviting home environment,’ the Plank Hardware team explains. Still mystified? Let’s break it down.
The Vibe
‘This trend encourages us to embrace comfort, nostalgia, and character in our homes, allowing us to create spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and unmistakably authentic,’ says Tom Revill, creative director of Plank Hardware. ‘Interiors this season are going to reflect a balance of cosiness and elegance. People are moving away from picture-perfect homes and embracing spaces that feel lived-in and welcoming – it’s about capturing that effortless charm.’
The Furniture
‘Expect to see relaxed seating arrangements, layered textiles and a mix of vintage and modern furnishings that speak to a life lived, rather than curated,’ explains Tom. ‘Bobbin furniture, inspired by the heritage of English craftsmanship, lends a particularly whimsical touch to the frazzled English woman aesthetic, offering an inviting balance of comfort and artistry. Similar to cottagecore, the look embraces a rustic vibe with materials, patterns and colours that evoke the cosiness of English countryside living.’
The Materials
‘One of the standout materials in this interior trend is antique brass, which has seen a resurgence recently thanks to its timeless elegance and versatility,’ Tom states. ‘Whether used in lighting fixtures, picture frames or hardware, antique brass adds a touch of warmth and nostalgia to any space. Its subtle sheen enhances the cosy, lived-in feel of this aesthetic while offering a contrast to softer materials like linen and wool.’
The Decor
‘The aesthetic is characterised by neutral tones, textured fabrics and intentionally “undone” looks, such as casually draped throws and imperfectly stacked books,’ muses Tom. ‘It mirrors the mindset of those who prioritise comfort and practicality while still maintaining a distinctive personal style.’ So, forget pristine white fabrics and picture-perfect sofas that turn out to be undeniably uncomfortable; it seems that comfort really is key.
Even more good news? ‘The aesthetic also leans into the “intentional clutter” trend,’ says Tom, ‘embracing the idea that your home is meant to be lived in and that clutter is an organic part of that.’ Count us in…
