Astrology might guide you to the perfect green addition for your home
You might already dress for your Venus sign, or perhaps you follow your horoscope day-by-day. Astrology can play into your fashion choices, and even where you choose to go on holiday – and, according to astrologer Inbaal Honigman (with plant experts Beard & Daisies), it may be able to suggest the houseplant that ultimately suits your star sign.
Which Houseplant Suits Your Star Sign?
Aquarius (20 January – 18 February): Boston Fern
The Boston Fern is a great air purifier, ‘removing toxins like formaldehyde from the air’, says Inbaal. It’s a low maintenance plant that loves humidity, particularly suiting bathrooms. This makes it perfect for Aquarians, who, like the plant, are ‘generous to others but ask for very little in return.’
Pisces (19 February – 20 March): String Of Hearts
Pisces are known for their romantic, whimsical streak. The perfect choice for this star sign, then, is the String of Hearts. ‘It’s cascading vines add charm and whimsy to any space,’ says Inbaal. To boot, it only needs occasional watering – Pisces can be inwards-facing and spontaneous, so this will suit those who get caught up in distraction.
Aries (21 March – 19 April): Bird Of Paradise
‘An Aries is a passionate sign that thrives on a little drama,’ says Inbaal. So in this instance you’ll want a showstopper – for this purpose, she says, opt for a Bird of Paradise. These plants typically need regular sunlight (although it is recommended to avoid strong afternoon sun) – so perfectly suits a star sign who is similarly the star of the show.
Taurus (20 April – 20 May): Fiddle Leaf Fig
Sometimes known for being quite prideful and stubborn, Taurus can be a little bull-headed. But working with this star sign pays off: they’re fiercely loyal when you’ve earned their trust. The Fiddle Leaf Fig, says Inbaal, is ‘worth the effort’. ‘It requires a bit more attention in terms of light and humidity,’ she says, ‘but it’s a design icon: its tall, sculptural form and lush foliage makes it a standout.’
Gemini (21 May – 21 June): Snake Plant
Inbaal says: ‘A gemini is a social butterfly who loves coming home to a touch of nature.’ The snake plant suits those with busy lifestyles, because, according to Beards & Daisies, they flourish with minimal care.
Cancer (22 June – 22 July): Prayer Plant
Cancers are known for being emotional (if a little moody). But they’re also protective of their loved ones, and ever so loyal. Hopefully the Prayer Plant soothes their tumultuous souls, then. ‘The Prayer Plant is both captivating and calming,’ says Inbaal, ‘it adds a touch of movement and interest to any room.’
Leo (23 July – 22 August): Cowboy Cactus
A Leo loves being the centre of attention – and they’re never dull. For this star sign, then, you need something that commands the space. ‘The Cowboy Cactus is tall and sculptural – and it suits because it’s visually striking,’ says Inbaal, ‘the resilient plant requires very little water.’
Virgo (23 August – 22 September): Kentia Palm
Virgos, according to Inbaal, are known for being fuss-free and tolerant. So, she suggests, ‘the Kentia Palm is the perfect choice – it’s exceptionally hardy, tolerating low light and minimal watering, so is an easy-care option for busy households.’
Libra (22 September – 23 October): Peace Lily
Libras are known for their extroversion – they’re sometimes a bit of a gossip – but they’re natural peacemakers who love to find a compromise. So how to pick a houseplant for this star sign? Key to know is that they’re aesthetes, so Inbaal recommends a peace lily for these star signs. ‘The peace lily is known for its elegant white blooms that appear to float above its glossy green leaves,’ she says, ‘and because Libras are also easygoing, it’s perfect as it’s low-maintenance, thriving in low-light spaces. Both beautiful and functional.’
Scorpio (24 October – 21 November): ZZ Plant
Scorpios – those intense, maddening folk are sometimes considered aloof or detached. But their mystery yields to a softer determination below the surface. The ZZ plant at first glance looks difficult to care for, suggests Inbaal, but ‘it’s quite the opposite’. ‘It’s ideal for those who appreciate resilient plants that thrive in tough conditions,’ she says, ‘or those who value persistence and understated beauty.’
Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December): Swiss Cheese Plant
Also known as a Monstera, the Swiss Cheese plant is exotic and exciting, perfect for a star sign which is, according to Inbaal, ‘adventurous’. Sagittarians are known for their love of travel, and this plant is found in rainforest canopies in the wild.
Capricorn (22 December – 19 January): Money Tree
Capricorns are supposedly good with money. Fittingly, Inbaal says they should opt for the Money Tree plant: ‘it’s associated with good fortune and wealth!’ The plant is a popular gift choice, as it thrives in bright, indirect light.
