New year, new habits, new... home?
There’s nothing like a bit of spring cleaning in the depths of winter. If you’re wondering how to give your home a refresh in the New Year, we’ve rounded up some tips and tricks to get you started.
January Reset: How To Refresh Your Home For The New Year
Conduct An Interior Inventory
The first step to resetting your home is, naturally, decluttering – and this presents the perfect opportunity to take note of what you actually use (and what’s simply hiding in the cupboard).
‘It’s always a good idea to conduct an interior inventory when decluttering your home,’ advises Sam Deeble, home interiors expert at Woods Furniture. ‘This can really help you transition your home environment into the New Year. Start by assessing each room and considering what needs an update and what no longer serves a purpose. Disposing of unwanted items makes room for new pieces, allowing you to achieve your dream space in 2025.’ Sounds like an exciting opportunity to jump on all of this year’s buzzy interior design trends…
Reshuffle Your Furniture
It might take a bit of elbow grease, but having a furniture reshuffle can make your home look unrecognisable (to say nothing of the benefits of Feng Shui).
‘Moving furniture around is an easy way to transform a space into something completely different,’ says Sam. It’s guaranteed to give you some new interior design ideas, too: ‘Creating the illusion of a fresh, new room, it can liven up an outdated aesthetic, sparking creativity and introducing a breath of fresh air into your home,’ he continues.
Revamping a room’s layout can also help to better utilise space, shedding light on areas (or furniture pieces) that you don’t use. ‘Moving furniture is another way to encourage decluttering,’ adds Sam. ‘This ultimately allows you to feel more connected to your home as you understand how to personalise the space.’
Swap Out Your Soft Furnishings
If you don’t fancy repainting your house or ripping out the kitchen this year, replacing smaller items is a much more manageable way to shake things up.
‘Swapping out your soft furnishings is a simple and affordable change that can dramatically impact the overall aesthetic of your home,’ notes Sam. ‘This subtle switch can introduce new colours and themes, creating a space that feels fresh and visually appealing. Consider replacing your curtains, opting for new cushions, or introducing a rug.’
Invest In New Decor Pieces
While January is always a great time to be frugal, who says you can’t treat yourself to some new homeware? Check out resale platforms, antique shops and your favourite interiors brands, pull together a moodboard, and make that investment – you won’t regret it.
‘Investing in new decor can significantly impact your mood, making you feel more positive about the year ahead,’ says Sam. ‘Whether it’s trendy artwork, a fresh flower arrangement, or a bigger piece like a new dining table, bringing in new items is guaranteed to enhance your interiors.’
Introduce Fresh Scents
One of the simplest ways to refresh your home is to try new scents – a small change that can have a huge impact.
‘Experimenting with a new home fragrance – particularly a scent that resonates with you, lifts your mood, or complements the season – can change your relationship with your home, creating a fresh space for the New Year,’ explains Sam.
Switch Up Your Lighting
Not only does lighting ‘dramatically influence a room’s aesthetic’, says Sam, but it also hugely affects how you feel – which is particularly important to consider if you suffer from symptoms of SAD.
‘Investing in lighting can lift your spirits and prevent the January blues,’ he adds. ‘Fairy lights, table lamps, or a pendant light above the dining table can change a room’s appearance and create a cosy and inviting space.’
