Here’s how to style it
From Peach Fuzz to Viva Magenta, we can always count on Pantone to pick a fun (and sometimes controversial) Colour of the Year. Here’s what you need to know about the 2025 shade – and how to style it.
‘Mocha Mousse’ Is The Pantone Colour Of The Year For 2025
There are a few things quite as hotly anticipated in the interiors world than Pantone’s Colour of the Year, and the wait is finally over: 2025’s shade has officially been announced. Introducing Mocha Mousse, a rich, creamy brown that you can expect to see in everything from wallpaper and paint to furniture and decor.
‘PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse is an evocative soft brown that transports our senses into pleasure and deliciousness,’ says the Panetone team. The colour evokes ‘the delectable quality of cacao, chocolate and coffee, appealing to our desire for comfort.’
According to Panetone, the colour was chosen as a symbol of our connection to nature. ‘Honouring the growing movement to align ourselves more closely with the natural world, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse embraces the sustenance of our physical environment’,’ the brand explains.
So, what do interior designers think about the announcement? ‘It’s the perfect embodiment of how interior trends are leaning into naturals and neutrals,’ comments Chloe Barrow, an interior expert at Laura James. ‘We’re moving away from bright plastic decor to more sustainable choices, such as interior pieces made from materials like mango wood or bamboo. The warm brown colour represents how many will embrace environmentally conscious pieces in 2025, alongside more neutral colour palettes and the classic concept of bringing the outside in.’
When it comes to styling brown in your home, it’s a great way to ‘add tone and dimension to a room,’ Chloe continues. ‘Opting for a warm brown throw or cushions can give a timeless look to a white or cream sofa. Equally, brown candle holders are a chic addition to tables and mantelpieces with wood finishes.’ The colour also pairs well in rooms with green accents (including houseplants!), deepening the earthy look.
Moving into 2025, then, Mocha Mousse might just take over. ‘I predict the return of brown leather or faux leather statement pieces, particularly in modern variations of armchairs,’ says Chloe. ‘Midcentury modern styles will likely adapt to feature more deep brown upholstery options – especially when it comes to accent chairs – and we’ll likely see a resurgence of dark wooden furniture. I’d recommend opting for timeless investments like mahogany, ebony, and walnut pieces, which make particular grand dining tables, vanities, and coffee tables.’
