Highfield and Brookham Schools have paid tribute to our fallen war heroes.
Head of Highfield and Brookham School, Suzannah Cryer and her husband Bob, read out the names of the former pupils who have lost their lives while serving their country during two world wars.
The school took part in a two-minute silence, gave a rendition of The Last Post and there was a special performance on the bagpipes. Children in Year 4 made ceramic poppies in their art lessons.
Suzannah Cryer commented: ‘Like so many other schools, the Highfield and Brookham community was so sadly affected by the Great War from 1914-18 and the Second World War from 1939-45, and it’s imperative that the sacrifice these brave souls made should never ever be forgotten.’
The school has strong links with wartime. Former Headmaster, Peter Mills had escaped from a war camp in Northern Italy in 1943. He had been kept imprisoned at Fontanellato during the Second World War. Mr Mills managed to escape with the help of locals, guards and commandant who guided him through the ‘Freedom Trail’.
Today, the Freedom Trail is only walked by those who are keen to understand that time in history.
