We're all tied up in this trend

If there’s one trend that has stood the test of 2024, it has to be the humble bow. Whether they’re clipped in your hair, decorating a manicure or even hung on the door, bows are a hot topic – especially when it comes to end-of-year festivities.

No longer reserved for Christmas presents, this dainty detail will be making a bold statement throughout the season. No surface will go unbowed. ‘Bows are no longer simply a cutesy adornment reserved for hair clips and heels,’ confirms Lisa Illis, head of womenswear design at M&S. ‘This season, we’re seeing ribbons on everything from blouses to festive jumpers.’

So, how will you be styling yours? If you’re not sure, you can find some inspiration below.

How To Style The Bow Trend For Christmas & NYE

Maximalist Hair Accessories

The first thing that comes to mind when we think of bows? Chic, supersized hair ribbons. ‘Oversized hair accessories – such as scrunchies – have been having a moment recently,’ notes Lisa. ‘And this season is all about XXL hair bows. Far from the accessories you may remember from your school days, these chic additions can be used to elevate any hairstyle. Simply adorn a half-up, half-down style with a satin bow or pearl hair clip.’

Bowed Ballet Pumps

Another way to wear the trend? Team it up with another one of this year’s major trends: ballet flats. ‘From high street to high end, many of the ballet pumps that are so popular this season feature a charming, understated bow,’ says Lisa. It’s not just flats that getting the ribbon treatment, either. ‘Similarly, we’re also seeing bows on slingbacks and even higher heels.’

Party In The Back

The same fun goes for party dresses this season. ‘When it comes to partywear, one thing that unites many of our sell-out party dresses this season is a special feature: big, beautiful bows at the back,’ notes Lisa. ‘As well as looking pretty and playful, this is ideal if you’re trying to exude quiet luxury.’

Bow Stacking

And when one bow’s not enough? Bow stacking comes in handy. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, then the look certainly will. This trend is all about creating a perfect line of ribbons – either in your hair, on your dress or anywhere else you can think of. The perfect way to elevate the structure of your look.

Scandi-Style Blouses

For those who prefer the ‘jeans and a nice top combo’, there’s a bow for you too. ‘The iconic Copenhagen-style blouse has paved the way for a host of bow-adorned shirts,’ highlights Lisa. ‘Alongside the classic puff sleeve variety, there are a whole range of new silhouettes which are perfect for layering.

‘Anything with bow tie closures at the front is always a winner for me,’ she continues. ‘But there are some stunning styles with bows on the sleeves to consider this season too.’

Coquette Jewellery

And don’t forget to accessorise. ‘Bow jewellery is the perfect way to dip your toe into the trend,’ notes Lisa. ‘Opt for bow stud earrings for on-the-go comfort, or drop earrings for special occasion impact.’
