Bella Freud's high street takeover continues

M&S has always had a pretty solid clothing selection – but recently, the high street stalwart has really upped its game. Spearheaded by trendy new designs and exciting collaborations, the brand has once again claimed its title as a British icon. And the next collab on the list? M&S has teamed up with London-based designer Bella Freud on an ultra-chic AW24 offering – and it’s quickly getting snapped up online.

M&S Teams Up With Bella Freud On AW24 Collection

Launching today, the M&S x Bella Freud collection is comprised of 27 hero pieces that bring together the designer’s playful style – including her signature slogan sweaters – and the store’s trusted quality.

Inspired by the history of M&S, Bella Freud paid a visit to the retailer’s archive in Leeds, where she immersed herself in the brand and its modern evolution. From there, she worked collaboratively with the M&S design team to create the final collection. Through it all, the designer took a hands-on approach to the collaboration, from concepting at the archive and sketching designs in her London studio, through to seeing the collection come to life on set during the campaign shoot.

Collection Highlights

As mentioned, the capsule features 27 new styles spanning knitwear, tailoring and accessories – with a colour palette ranging from neutrals to soft pastels to colour pops. ‘With nods to uniform, and Bella’s love of graphic packaging, [the collection] features tailoring, alongside slogan knits and matching accessories,’ says M&S in an official release.

Bella Freud’s slogan sweaters play a starring role in the collection, with knits decorated with the words ‘Divine Feminine’, ‘Honey’ and ‘Nature’. The M&S noted that each statement was hand-drawn by the designer herself, ‘with every element considered and captured… From proportion to stroke and movement, giving each word a life of its own.’

But a major highlight has to be the capsule’s suiting options. ‘For Bella, the indispensable piece from the collection is the suit,’ comments M&S. ‘A transformative look dependent on its pairing, dressed up and formalised with the tie neck shirt or dressed down with a relaxed, soft knit.’

Transformation also lies at the heart of the collab. Designed in a capsule format, the collection is made to be mix-and-matched, played with and styled up or down. A pinstripe blazer can be worn with a matching skirt or trousers, or teamed up with a chunky knit and jeans; sweater vests can be thrown over a tie neck shirt or worn on their own with jeans; and scarves and hats can worn in multiple colour combinations for maximum vibrancy.
