Vinted Has Just Released Its First Ever Luxury Trends Report

These are the resale moves making a mark on the platform right now
It’s an age old story: you buy a new piece of clothing in the shop that you’re sure you’ll love, you’ll wear it once or twice, leave it fester in the back of your wardrobe for a few months and then eventually sell it on secondhand. But how do luxury goods fit into the narrative? With more than 80 million members using its marketplace, Vinted is one of the world’s leading resale apps – and something of an expert when it comes to identifying preloved trends, both luxury and high street. The platform also recently compiled the 2024 Vinted Luxury Trends Report, a collection of facts and stats highlighting the luxury shopping habits of its users. These are the top trends.

While having started out as a resale platform known primarily for marked down high street finds, Vinted has been carving out a name for itself in the preloved luxury space in recent years. Designer names have been floating around on the app for a while, but in 2023 Vinted piloted and then began to roll out an Item Verification service that gave users the option to have items (specifically bags, accessories, jewellery, shoes and sneakers) worth over €100 verified by Vinted’s team of experts – opening the door on a trusted and authenticated luxury resale service. And with so many members in its community, the Vinted team were able to identify what it is their secondhand shoppers were looking for.
And so, the Vinted Luxury Trends Report was born. ‘With millions of registered members across 20 countries, Vinted has the ability to identify resale trends quickly,’ says Cecile Wickmann, Senior Director of Luxury at Vinted. ‘This community power is backed by our team’s experience and knowledge in the luxury and high-end fashion market, making Vinted the ultimate destination for luxury buyers and sellers.’
Here are the key take-aways from the report you need to know:
1. The Top Brands Are Louis Vuitton, Chanel & Gucci
So, who came out on top? In its report, Vinted highlights a number of designer brands who are current luxury bestsellers on the app, and (surprise, surprise) it looks like heritage designer labels continue to exercise a strong hold on shoppers. Louis Vuitton was revealed as one of the top and fastest selling brands on Vinted, alongside Chanel and Gucci, with Hermès, Dior, Saint Laurent and Prada also listed as some of the brands its members showed the most preference for.
2. The UK Really Likes Black
And, of those luxury items, the UK showed a specific interest in black luxury items – more than any other European country, in fact. It seems that UK shoppers prefer to go down the stealth wealth route, with items that focus on classic designs and multi-use wearability (after all, black does go with everything) rather than vibrant colourways.
3. Brand Favourites Differ From Country To Country
Speaking of Europe, it seems that our shopping habits do indeed differ from country to country. In the UK, for example, brands like Tag Heuer and Canada Goose come in the top 10 of best selling luxury brands on Vinted – but this isn’t the case in other European markets. In contrast, Céline and Bottega Veneta continue to be in-demand brands in Germany, while Spain still shows a stronger interest in Omega than any other country.
‘While Vinted’s best-selling luxury brands are featured in the top ten lists across all European markets, we still see distinct variations in buying and selling patterns,’ adds Wickmann. ‘For instance, Italy is a classic “seller country” of second-hand fashion, with significantly more listers than buyers, whereas France thrives as a major buying hub, with more buyers than sellers. Notably, members in the Netherlands are searching for more high-end loafers, whereas the British show significantly more interest in black luxury items compared to their European counterparts.
‘It is also noteworthy that local brands have solidified their presence in their respective countries,’ she continues. ‘For example, Mulberry ranks among the top three best-selling brands in the UK, while the Burberry Bridle Tartan Check Bag is emerging as one of the most liked items in 2024 so far. The top-selling luxury brands in France include Chanel, Hermès and Dior, while Fendi and Gucci are among the top-selling luxury brands in Italy, and Loewe is preferred by Spanish fashion enthusiasts. In Germany, MCM secures a spot in the top seller rankings.’
4. Vintage Is In
And, as always, vintage finds continue to be a popular trend on Vinted – especially in the luxury realm. ‘There is currently demand for vintage pieces from the 80s and 90s on the second-hand market,’ explains Bjorn Holzhauer, Senior Brand Expert at Vinted. ‘Current fashion is inspired by past decades and collections. As part of the archival trend, designer brands are constantly orienting themselves on older collections and models from their archives.
‘While the last few seasons have focused on the late 90s and Y2K look, which saw the revival of the Dior Saddle Bag, Fendi Baguette and Prada Nylon Bag, things are now going even further back in time with elements from the 80s and even 50s, with feminine pin-up style dresses or polka dots,’ he continues. ‘This could also boost demand for vintage items from this era and in these styles. Vintage tweed blazers, such as those from Etro or Ralph Lauren, could also increase in resale.’
5. Story-Driven Investments
The Vinted Luxury Trends Report also notes that we shouldn’t underestimate the power of a story. From the Hermès Kelly Bag to the Rolex Datejust and to Chanel Flap Bag, hero items with a stand-out brand story continue to be some of the most coveted items on the platform. Holzhauer notes that these pieces, which are usually made in limited edition batches, are made all the more popular by the small amount in circulation. ‘ Due to scarcity, demand is increasingly outstripping supply and some items – especially classic handbags – are proving to be real winners when it comes to resale,’ he says. ‘The brand heritage and story behind an item’s creation also play major roles. With some designs, in the right colour and condition, you can have a win immediately after purchase. And the forecast that the value of those items will continue to rise is promising.’
