Swing back to the 60s

Bobs are back, in a big way. The short hairstyle has had a major moment over the last 12 months – and they’re ready to do it all over again in 2025. First up in the salon? The 60s bob.

What Is A 60s Bob?

‘The 60s bob is a short, jaw-length bob that is chunky through the outline, giving plenty of movement and bounce through the ends,’ explains Cos Sakkas, three-times British Hairdresser of the Year and TONI&GUY Global Creative Director. ‘It’s all in the detail with this cut. It has that little bit of extra polish and sophistication, as well as a versatile parting which can be worn in various ways. This gives the 60s bob an effortless and cool feel, distinguishing it from your classic bob cut. It’s a nod to the past but totally modern.’

And it seems to have the celebrity seal of approval too. ‘Selena Gomez has recently stepped out with this look, and it’s great to see celebrities wearing shorter hairstyles that are versatile and on trend.’ Cos tells us that other notable names trying out the trend include Michelle Yeoh, Zendaya, Kaia Gerber and Keke Palmer.

Who Suits This Cut?

Cos assures us that the adaptability of this cut means it’s a great match for just about anyone. ‘The great thing about the bob is there is a shape to suit every face shape,’ he says. ‘And with the 60s bob, it can be tweaked here and there to make it work. The oval face shape is the luckiest as all bobs suit this face shape, especially the 60s bob.’

How To Ask For A 60s Bob In The Salon

In the salon, you’ll want to ask for a bob with movement and bounce. You can bring some reference photos in to get the idea across to your stylist, and go through what will work for your face shape, hair type and lifestyle during your consultation.

How To Style A 60s Bob

Any styling choices come down to your personal preferences with this cut, but Cos notes that ‘it looks great if it’s left to dry naturally, but also appears softer and feminine when blow-dried.

‘As with any styling, try to keep touching it to a minimum to avoid it frizzing,’ he adds. ‘Apply a smoothing balm through the mid-lengths and ends and leave to dry naturally, or blow-dry for a more polished finish. Alternatively, set it on rollers for that ultimate 60s bouncy finish. Once it’s set, keep your fingers away; if you must touch it, use the end of a comb to prevent it frizzing and flopping out of shape.’

What Next?

Cos explains that the ever-evolving nature of the bob is what keeps it on-trend. ‘The thing that makes it different and modern is in the detail – a flick through the ends, the addition of a fringe, a change in the parting or a difference in length,’ he says. ‘The basics are the same, but the finish is modern and on trend. And when we’re craving nostalgia, it proves just as popular when woven with throwback styling.’
