Summer continues with these golden hues

We might be nearing September, but summer doesn’t have to end – especially if you’re blonde. Salons are gearing up for the transitional period by swapping out light tones for warm, natural shades. The result? The sunny, buttery hues of Balearic blonde.

What Is Balearic Blonde?

‘Balearic blonde is an effortlessly natural blonde shade that brightens in the sun, like you’re on a sunny Spanish island,’ explains Gennaro Costabile, senior stylist and colourist at ADEM. ‘Picture a beachy, golden, sun-kissed vibe. Balearic blonde stands out for its warm undertones, giving the hair a natural, sun-kissed appearance that feels effortless. The goal is a colour that looks as if you’ve been lounging on the beach or spending long days outdoors, sipping sangria – far from the typical salon blonde.’

And unlike brighter, cooler tones of blonde, this one thrives on a low-maintenance look. ‘Unlike other blondes that may require more upkeep, Balearic exudes a relaxed, carefree vibe,’ confirms Gennaro. ‘This shade is appealing because it’s so low-maintenance and easy to manage. The sun enhances the colour if you’re on holiday, and it grows out subtly without leaving harsh roots. For those looking for a natural, laid-back look, this is the perfect option.’

Who Suits This Shade?

‘This blonde complements skin tones with olive to bronzy undertones,’ suggests Gennaro. ‘Though anyone feeling bold can give it a try.’

How To Ask For Balearic Blonde Hair In The Salon?

It’s important to communicate the specific shade of blonde you’re after with your stylist. ‘When asking for this shade, simply request a warm, natural, honey blonde,’ recommends Gennaro. ‘Keep in mind that dying hair is a gradual process, especially if your hair is virgin. If you have previously dyed darker hair, achieving the Balearic blonde look will require patience and more than one session. Non-natural blondes may need some bleach, but toners will be used to protect the hair and give it a healthier finish.’

How To Style Balearic Blonde Hair

Being inspired by the Balearics, it makes sense that this blonde looks perfect when styled in beach-ready waves. ‘Natural waves beautifully complement this warm, effortless tone, and are easy to achieve at home,’ adds Gennaro. ‘A slicked-back bun also makes for a great evening look.’

How To Maintain Balearic Blonde Hair

Worried about hair damage? You can minimise the harsher impact of dye with nourishing products that protect and enhance hair health. ‘I recommend using sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, as they help protect bleached hair,’ says Gennaro. ‘Avoid purple shampoo, as it can ruin the warm tones of the blonde, leaving your hair brassy and dull. Also, be sure to use leave-in conditioner and heat protection, especially if you’re spending time in the sun.’

What Next?

Expect bigger and better things for Balearic blonde in the coming months. ‘I definitely see this trend gaining popularity,’ confirms Gennaro. ‘Although not everyone knows about it yet, once it catches on, I think many people will gravitate toward this look. Who doesn’t love the idea of looking bronzed and golden all year round? Plus, as we head into autumn, this shade is an easy transition – just add a toner, and you’re all set.’
