With many gyms and fitness studios closed for the foreseeable, exercise routines around the world have been thrown out of kilter. Lots of us are now working out from home, and while there are plenty of exercises that don’t require a gym, it’s always useful to have a helping hand. With this in mind we’ve rounded up some of the best fitness apps on the market, featuring easy to follow workouts, activity tracking, motivational content and more.

Fiit

Fiit offers a range of exercise classes through an app, streamed through a device onto your TV. A chest strap is used to track heart rate, calories and reps, while real-time performance feedback keeps users motivated. Trainers on their books include Adrienne Herbert, Steph Elswood and Richie Norton, with classes ranging from HIIT to strength training to breathwork.

SWEAT: Kayla Itsines

Kayla Itsines was one of the first fitness influencers – and she’s now one of the world’s most famous, with over 12 million followers on Instagram. She first sprung onto the scene with workout programme Bikini Body Guide (BBG), which launched a worldwide online fitness community. This developed into hugely popular SWEAT: Kayla Itsines app, which she created alongside fiancé Tobi Pearce. This offers a wide selection of 28-minute workouts, alongside recipes and lifestyle tips.

Freeletics

Billed as a digital personal trainer, Freeletics is an app offering a variety of running, bodyweight and gym workouts, alongside short fitness challenges. The USP here is The Coach, which manifests as demo videos, tutorials, and personalised plans created using clever algorithms, comparing your data with other users on a similar fitness journey. There are over 900 workouts to choose from, ranging from 10 to 25 minutes long.

Aaptiv

Gain access to over 2,500 audio-guided workout classes via your phone with on-demand fitness app Aaptiv. Around 30 new sessions are added each week, from strength training to yoga, alongside tailored programmes for aspiring racers.

Nike Training Club App

This app offers a wide selection of workouts designed by Nike Master Trainers, including endurance, strength, yoga and mobility sessions. Many can be done from the comfort of your own home, and all videos come with a great playlist to keep you motivated. You’ll also have access to training plans, which can be tailored to your individual needs – there’s a bodyweight only plan, for instance, and another targeted at beginners.

Whether you’re running, cycling, swimming or hiking, track your fitness activity with Strava. You’ll get key stats including distance, pace, speed and calories burned, as well as access to routes and maps. It’s a good way of connecting with other athletes to, with options to post activity to your Strava feed and compare adventures with your followers.

Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth is behind this wellness app, which offers not just workouts, but meal plans, guided meditations and motivational content. Classes on offer include HIIT, boxing, yoga, strength training and MMA, with options for everyone from beginners to pros.

This app offers individual yoga workouts led by professional yogis, with personalised routines, stretches and challenges which you can watch from your phone.

Niix Fit

The newly launched Niix Fit app offers a blend of Pilates and cardio, targeted at busy mums looking for easy ways to keep fit. Classes range from 10 to 30 minutes and require no equipment, with a variety of programmes to choose from including workouts for pre and post-natal women.

Auro

This app bills itself as a ‘personal trainer in your ear’, offering hundreds of audio-guided workouts, from tempo runs to strength training. AI-based algorithms are used to tailor each workout to the user, allowing personalised sessions and training plans – just like a real-life PT.
