Unexpected Blue Theory Has Made It To The Nail Salon

A last-minute entry for colour of the year

Forget nude, maroon and Brat green – the colour on everyone’s lips this season has to be cobalt blue. The statement shade has been popping up all over the place recently, from runways to homes to cocktail menus. And now, it’s ready to take on the beauty salon. Here’s how to tackle the blue nails trend taking over TikTok.

What Is Unexpected Blue Theory?

Unexpected blue theory is all about introducing shades of blue into areas you wouldn’t usually think to place it. Having first had its run on the interiors – and later, fashion – circuit, the trend brings flashes of blue to the forefront in striking pops of colour.

‘It follows the desire for individuals to express their personal style in unique and creative ways,’ Baked Clay London‘s Adam Laws told us in our fashion guide. ‘We know that blue, and cobalt blue in particular, has a timeless appeal. This makes it the perfect shade for statement looks and to go against the grain of the traditional autumnal palette. Definitely one for the creatives among us.’

You’ll catch most of the style set wearing the trend on their feet, over their shoulders or around the necks – in other words, as a staple accessory. Elevating an otherwise simple or monochrome outfit, adding a playful hint of blue is a creative (and not too in-your-face) means of bringing colour to your wardrobe.

But this season, we’re seeing unexpected blue theory migrate from clothes to nails. Salons have happily taken blue hues onboard, using the opportunity to experiment with styles, textures and patterns. And it might just be our (unexpectedly) favourite way to take on the trend.

How To Wear The Trend

First, you need to choose a shade. Unexpected blue theory is pretty versatile, in that it doesn’t limit you to just one shade of blue – but the most on-trend hues right now are deep electric, navy and cobalt blue.

As for the nail design, you can go as big or as small as you want. Since the manicure itself is the unexpected pop of blue in your look, it doesn’t really need to be limited to a super dainty design – although, if you want one, that’s okay too.

Some of our favourite ways to take on the trend include blue French tips, all-over almonds and abstract swirls, as well as textural jelly and chrome finishes.

How To Ask For Blue Nails In The Salon

If it’s all-over blue you’re after, simply go into your appointment with an idea of the shade you have in mind. From there, you can check what colours your nail tech has on offer.

For more detailed nail designs, you’ll need to be a little more prepared. Round up some images of designs you like, from places like Instagram and Pinterest, that you can show your nail tech. This will ensure both of you are on the same page when it comes to creating your dream manicure.
