The short styles taking over the salon
It’s been a good year for the bob. The short hairstyle has been everywhere recently – from the red carpet to fashion shows to the high street – earning itself a top spot in salons and on the HairTok circuit. But with so many bobs to choose from, how do we know which one to try? These are the bob trends that set to be big in 2025, according to salon professionals.
Why Is The Bob Still Popular?
It never went out of style, really. We’ve been crazy about the haircut for over 100 years – and now, it’s entering a new chapter of popularity. ‘The bob haircut has maintained its popularity due to its versatility and timeless appeal – I call it the little black dress of hair,’ says Mark Hayes, International Creative Director at House of Sassoon.
@hairbysuziangelina Timeless. Classic. Old Money 🤍 I always love creating my signature Old Money Bobs, but this one was extra special 🌇 The Beautiful Sienna was growing her Bob and Blonde out for over 7 months, scared of bleach damage. Our options were either a Soft and Creamy Old Money Bob, or to keep it darker and grow it all out… Do you think the Old Money Blonde Bob was the right move ? 👀 Comment ‘OLD MONEY’ if you want me to share what magical product I used to create this classy shine ✨ I am so happy to say I filmed this full colour tutorial for my education page :) – I have 3 amazing tutorials coming this month and this will be one of them. No root melt, to toner, just some Blonding and Lowlights for brightness and dimension. #oldmoneybob #oldmoneyblonde #oldmoneybeige #brondehair #creamyblondehair #sunkissedblonde #sunkissedbronde #bobhairinspo #bobinspo #bobcutinspo #oldmoneyinspo #oldmoneyaesthetic #bobhairlife #blondehairbob #blondebobhair #rootyblonde #blendedblonde #creamyblonde #goldenblonde #beigehaircolor #oldmoneyhaircolor @Sienna cochrane ♬ original sound – Hairbysuziangelina
We’ve seen variations of the cut pop up over the decades, but it wasn’t until the 50s and 60s that it hit the pop culture mainstream. British stylist Vidal Sassoon, who is credited with creating the five-point cut, is credited with making the bob a modern icon. Worn by the likes Mary Quant and Nancy Kwan, his close-cut geometric rendition put the bob on the map.
And now, 70 years later, it’s still a sign of contemporary sophistication. ‘The bob haircut in all its forms is everywhere right now, and will remain that way through 2025,’ emphasises Mark ‘This highlights the bob’s adaptability and enduring appeal, ensuring its prominence in the hairstyling landscape.’
But what are the biggest bob trends of 2025? This is the verdict:
The Bob Trends To Look Out For In 2025
1. Italian Bob
The first hairstyle poised for a 2025 takeover is the Italian bob, a rounded, face-framing style cut roughly around the chin. Think chunky, blunt ends and minimal layers for an added thickness. ‘This chin-length, blunt-cut bob exudes sophistication and is easy to style, making it a favourite for those seeking a chic yet low-maintenance look,’ notes Mark.

2. Layered Bob
We’re also going to see a shift towards messy-chic styles, like the layered bob. ‘Incorporating soft, strategically placed layers adds movement and texture, this style offers a modern twist on the classic bob,’ highlights Mark. ‘It’s also adaptable to various hair types and face shapes, making it a go-to look.’

3. Jawline Bob
As for length, Mark sees bob styles cut to the jaw being a popular trend for the new year. ‘Cut precisely at the jawline, this sleek and bold statement style provides a polished appearance,’ he says. ‘It’s ideal for those wanting a sharp and confident look.’

4. 90s Bob
The demand for low-maintenance, high-impact hairstyles also calls for unfussy bob cuts in 2025. Combine this with a craving for nostalgia, and you have the 90s bob. ‘Inspired by the iconic styles of the 1990s, this bob features shoulder-skimming blunt ends, offering a nostalgic yet contemporary vibe,’ highlights Mark.

5. Asymmetrical Bob
We can also expect a revival of the ultimate 10s haircut: the asymmetrical bob. But Mark promises it comes with a contemporary refresh. ‘With uneven lengths on either side, this edgy cut adds a dynamic element to the traditional bob, appealing to those seeking a bold and modern hairstyle,’ he says.

6. French Bob
A classic that has yet to go out of style, the French bob will also be a big trend for 2025. As Mark explains, ‘characterized by its short length and often accompanied by bangs, the French bob offers a chic and effortless style that complements high necklines and scarves, making it suitable for the winter season.’

7. Old Hollywood Bob
A popular look on the red carpet this year, we spotted plenty of celebrities wearing a Hollywood-style bob cut complete with curls and dramatic volume. ‘This mid-length bob is inspired by vintage glamour,’ adds Mark. ‘It features soft waves and a side part, providing a timeless and elegant look.’

8. Bixie Cut
Not sure how far to take your bob? This trend lets your hair sit comfortably between two classic short styles: ‘A hybrid between a bob and a pixie cut, the bixie offers a playful and youthful appearance,’ notes Mark. ‘It combines the fullness of a bob with the short length of a pixie, offering the best of both worlds.’

10. Collarbone-Length Bob
Longer, grown-out bob styles will also have a moment in 2025, Mark tells us. ‘Known as the “lob,” this longer bob grazes the collarbone, offering versatility in styling and suiting various face shapes and hair textures.’
