Where there's smoke, there's fire – and this trend is catching at record speed

Not ready to trade in those golden hues now that summer is over? Well, this new trend says you don’t have to. Bonfire blonde is the perfect transitional shade for autumn/winter – and it’s already a hit amongst the likes of Phoebe Dynevor, Hailey Bieber and Amelia Dimoldenberg.

What Is Bonfire Blonde?

‘Bonfire blonde is the perfect blend of warm, rich blonde hues, with slightly smoky undertones that bring depth to the colour – almost reminiscent of a softly glowing ember,’ explains Jason Collier, stylist and Key Opinion Leader at Jerome Russell. ‘It’s a bit darker and earthier than the traditional bright summer blonde, with a highlighted or balayage feel that adds natural movement and avoids a blocky look. This tone feels cosy, refined, and ideally suited for autumn and winter. It essentially provides that “cool girl” blonde that’s on-trend, yet beautifully wearable.’

What Sets It Apart From Other Blondes?

As Jason mentioned, this shade differs from the bright blonde hues of summer – but it’s also a departure from the icier tones we associate with autumn and winter. ‘Unlike icy or platinum blondes that are often cooler and lighter, bonfire blonde has a warmth and richness that captures the essence of colder months while maintaining a distinctly blonde appearance,’ he adds. ‘This tone combines subtle highlights and lowlights, giving it a more natural, earthy feel that’s less stark than summer blondes but also lighter and more dimensional than a brunette. It’s a look with depth, making it stand out in an understated way.’

And it’s this definitive look that is making bonfire blonde a popular choice in salons this season. And amongst the celebrity circuit. ‘We’re definitely seeing this shade popping up on a few trendsetters,’ emphasises Jason. ‘Phoebe Dynevor is a perfect example. Her hair strikes that balance between blonde and brunette, capturing the luxurious depth that epitomises bonfire blonde. Hailey Bieber’s take on the trend is slightly deeper, giving her a sleek, polished version of bonfire blonde that’s ideal for colder months. Both styles showcase how the shade brings a subtle sophistication, making it perfect for those looking for a natural yet refined look.

‘It resonates with the seasonal trend of going slightly warmer and darker, creating that snug, autumnal aesthetic many are craving,’ he continues. ‘The tone is incredibly versatile, balancing a relaxed, natural look with a sophisticated, layered depth that feels modern. I think people love the approachable, low-maintenance feel of this shade. Especially as we enter colder weather when hair care routines tend to shift toward more nurturing, rich tones.’

Who Suits This Colour?

Worried about contracting blonde blindness? Don’t be – Jason tells us this is a colour that can be adapted to suit pretty much any skin tone. ‘Bonfire blonde works wonderfully on warm to neutral skin tones, as it enhances the complexion without being overpowering,’ he starts. ‘Those with golden or olive undertones will find that the warmth of bonfire blonde really complements their skin. But it can be adapted with cooler highlights or lowlights to suit slightly cooler tones as well. It’s all about customising the depth and tone to match your natural colouring.’

How To Ask For Bonfire Blonde In The Salon

‘When going for bonfire blonde, it’s best to ask your colourist for a warm, highlighted blonde with slightly smoky undertones,’ Jason advises. ‘Show them reference images to capture the multi-tonal look you’re aiming for – a blend of darker blonde and light, warm brown hues with a natural balayage effect.’

How To Style Bonfire Blonde Hair

The best way to showcase your new colour, Jason tells us, is with some loose texture. ‘Bonfire blonde looks stunning when styled with loose waves or a soft, undone texture that enhances the natural blend of highlights and lowlights,’ he says. ‘Use a sea salt spray or texturising product to emphasise the movement, giving it that slightly windswept, effortless look.’

How To Maintain The Colour

Between salon appointments, you’ll want to keep your hair as healthy as possible. This will help ensure the colour also lasts for longer. ‘Maintaining bonfire blonde means keeping the colour vibrant and ensuring your hair stays hydrated,’ emphasises Jason. ‘Using a colour-safe, hydrating shampoo and conditioner can help preserve the richness of the tone. A weekly deep-conditioning treatment will also keep hair feeling soft and prevent dryness during the colder months.’

What Next?

Jason doesn’t see this trend staying static for long. ‘I think bonfire blonde will evolve with seasonal variations,’ he muses. ‘Possibly shifting to incorporate even warmer or deeper undertones as winter progresses. As people become more experimental, we may also see bonfire blonde with added shades of caramel or honey, or even a subtle gloss to bring in extra shine. For those wanting to add more dimension, a few face-framing highlights can give the colour even more versatility.’
