The bob with a (wispy) bang
Busy schedule? Then you likely don’t want the hassle of styling your hair every morning. Experts tell us that the cool girls are getting the bottleneck bob this season, a low-maintenance short hairstyle dripping with effortless chic.
What Is A Bottleneck Bob?
‘The bottleneck bob is a face-framing, shoulder-length bob, with a focus on wispy, lash-skimming bangs – otherwise known as a bottleneck fringe,’ explains Shu-Lan Cheun, a Technical Educator at FFØR. ‘It’s a short hairstyle paired with angled, cheekbone-framing pieces on each side.’
With its fluffy fringe and layered styling, the bottleneck bob looks sits alongside the likes of the French and butterfly bob. But what sets this cut apart is its easy upkeep. ‘This easy-to-wear bob has a natural fullness through the top with softer layers around the bottom so it can work well with all natural textures,’ Shu-Lan adds. ‘It’s a super versatile look that’s great for summer, since it can be styled with a polished finish or left natural. The day-to-day maintenance can be very minimal.’

Its popularity has spread into the realm of TikTok, where you’ll currently find over 15.8 million posts tagged under #bottleneckbob, as well as the celebrity circuit – just look at Emma Watson and Emma Stone for inspiration.
Who Suits This Cut?
As Shu-Lan mentioned, this is a super versatile cut. Designed to accentuate the wearer’s face through tailored layers, the bottleneck bob is made to suit everyone. ‘The beauty of this style is that it can be cut to suit any face shape and hair texture,’ she confirms.
How To Ask For A Bottleneck Bob In The Salon (& What To Expect)
‘Ask for a fuller-looking bob with soft longer layers that encourage your natural movement, with a bottleneck fringe that enhances your eyes and cheek bones,’ recommends Shu-Lan. You can also bring in some reference imagery, so that both of you and your stylist are on the same page.
So, what can we expect from the cut itself? ‘Your stylist will look to create a slim soft fringe in the middle with gradual layers that widen around the temples to the cheekbones, eventually blending into the length,’ explains the stylist and educator. ‘The length is determined by the client’s request and the texture and movement of the hair. This can vary from one length to layered but isn’t too dramatic or voluminous or done.’

How To Style A Bottleneck Bob
Fringe care should be your first point of call, recommends Shu-Lan. ‘The focal point will be the fringe, so if you’re short on time focus your attention on this,’ she suggests. The rest of the cut is fairly low maintenance, so might not require as much styling.
What Next?
Our expert sees this trend going one of two ways: super short, or super long. ‘I see this evolving into a shorter cropped bob with a wispy fringe,’ muses Shu-Lan. ‘Or grown out with lots of layers with volume.’
