This revamped red is taking over
If 2023 was a great year for blondes, then 2024 is shaping up to be a big one for redheads. Coming hot off the red carpet, cherry cola hair is the next big colour to have on your radar. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Cherry Cola Hair?
‘Cherry cola hair is a gorgeous shade of red that sits somewhere between a dark wine and auburn,’ says Domenico Casella, a senior stylist and colourist at Neville Hair & Beauty.
You’ll likely have noticed the shade popping up a lot more frequently over the last month or so, with multiple celebrities taking to the red carpet, film premieres and Fashion Week wearing cherry cola hair. ‘Dua Lipa launched the trend, wearing the cherry cola on a red, magenta side, rather than purple,’ confirms Domenico. ‘This makes the red shade very vibrant, and enhances her Mediterranean features.’
The latest adopter of the trend is Lady Gaga, who recently took to the red carpet for Joker: Folie Ă Deux. Armed with a textured cherry cola bob, the singer and actress leaned into a messy, choppy style befitting her character, Harley Quinn.

And further afield, the internet has also given this shade its seal of approval. A quick look on TikTok shows hair trend thriving, with the search term ‘cherry cola hair’ surpassing 191 million views on the platform.
How Does It Differ From Other Shades Of Red?
Red has long been a popular colour when it comes to dyeing our hair – so what makes cherry cola red stand out from the crowd? ‘It’s different from shades of red that have an orange or yellow base, which are more common,’ says Domenico. ‘Cherry cola has a purple base, which classifies this shade as a cooler red shade – giving it a more luxurious look and feel.’
How To Ask For Cherry Cola Hair At The Salon
As always, bring plenty of image references if you’re getting a new shade or style at your local hair salon. It’s recommended that you do your research and pick out elements of of the hair colour (not necessarily the whole look) that you really like, so that your stylist can tailor it to you.

Does This Shade Suit Everyone?
As this is a developing trend, it still has a lot of flexibility when it comes to execution. This, Domenico tells us, makes it adaptable for anyone who wants to give it a go. ‘Calibrating the red and the purple, you can create lots of different shades that are suitable for any skin tone,’ he says. ‘I think this is one of the main reasons why this hair colour is so popular.’
How To Ask For Cherry Cola Hair At The Salon
You’ll want to ask your stylist for a deep shade of red, verging on brown. If you’re struggling to describe the colour, bring in reference photos for your stylist. This will help them narrow down the shade you’re after.

Tips For Maintaining Cherry Cola Hair At Home
‘Once you have this vibrant colour, you’re going to want to make sure it’s properly taken care of,’ highlights Domenico. ‘Red dye tends to fade faster than other shades, making proper at-home hair care even more essential.
‘When it comes to keeping your new cherry locks rich and healthy, stick to less frequent, sulphate-free shampoo. The molecules in red dye are much larger than other colours and are easily stripped with every wash,’ he continues. ‘An easy and nice solution could be asking your hairdresser to add some professional direct pigment into a sulphate-free shampoo that you can purchase in the salon for home hair care, so that you can keep your hair colour vibrant and fresh while washing your hair.’
