What Is A Finger Wave Pixie Cut?

‘A finger wave pixie is a short, cropped hairstyle that combines the modern feel of a pixie cut with the sleek, structured look of a finger wave,’ explains Eugene Smith, Style Director at John Frieda Salons. ‘But where classic pixie is all about simplicity and texture, often curled softly or tousled, the finger wave pixie has more defined, S-shaped waves of finger waves. This adds a more slick, structured and bold element to the style. It’s more sculpted and deliberate compared to the typically more casual vibe of a classic pixie.’

With over 100 years of history under its belt, finger waves are one of the more persevering historical hair trends. ‘They’re a nod to the vintage 1920s, Josephine Baker flapper era,’ highlights Eugene. ‘As well as the Black female hip-hop movement from the 90s, as shown by the fierce Missy Elliot.’

And today, the finger wave pixie still proves popular, both online – there are currently 54.4 million posts tagged #fingerwavepixiecut on TikTok – and on the celebrity circuit.  ‘Finger waves are making a big comeback this season,’ agrees Eugene. ‘Largely because they’re super chic and have that versatile vintage vibe. We’re seeing some of our favourite celebrities wear them on the red carpet too. Zendaya, Cara Delevingne, Janelle Monae, Cardi B, Jodie Turner Smith, just to name a few. They’re showing how finger waves can create a modern look, so they feel fresh and new.’

Who Suits This Cut?

While anyone can give finger waves a go, our expert stylist notes that some might find it easier to achieve than others. ‘This look works best on straight or slightly wavy hair, because it’s easier to mould into those smooth, defined waves,’ says Eugene. ‘Fine to medium hair is ideal for keeping the hair as close to the scalp as possible.

‘As for face shapes, this style suits most anyone,’ he continues. ‘But it does particularly well on oval, heart, and square faces, because it highlights the cheekbones and can soften angular features.’

How To Ask For A Finger Wave Pixie In The Salon?

‘If you don’t have one already, simply ask your stylist for a pixie cut with finger waves incorporated into the style,’ recommends Eugene. ‘It’s best to bring in photos for reference, so the stylist can focus on how the waves are positioned. Be specific about how much length you want to keep and where you’d like the waves.’

He also tells us that the fresher the pixie cut, the easier it will be to add finger waves. ‘It is helpful if your hair is freshly shaped into your pixie cut,’ he says. ‘Your hair should be freshly washed so your stylist can start with a clean slate. It’s also good to mention if you have a specific part or wave pattern in mind.’

What Happens?

As for the salon process itself, Eugene says it’s pretty straightforward. ‘We start with the standard pixie cut, tailoring the length and shape to your preference,’ he tells us. ‘Then we determine where to part the hair; a deep side part is best. Next, we prep the hair for sculpting by applying a styling mousse through the damp hair. We’ll then use a fine-toothed comb and mousse to create the finger waves. We drag the comb back and forth meticulously shaping the S-pattern. The waves are set and dried to hold their shape, usually under a hooded dryer or with a diffuser. A light coating of a shine spray is applied as a last step for that glamorous glossy look.’

How To Style A Finger Wave Pixie

‘To maintain finger waves at home, you’ll need a good styling mousse and a fine-toothed comb,’ recommends Eugene. ‘Work with damp hair, apply the mousse, and carefully sculpt the waves by combing and pressing the hair into S-shapes. A hair net around your head can help protect and set the waves as they dry, keeping them neat and smooth.’

How To Maintain A Finger Wave Pixie

Regular trims are advised to keep any pixie cut in good condition. Our stylist recommends visiting the salon every four to six weeks.

As for maintaining the look of finger waves, Eugene says: ‘Use a lightweight, non-greasy gel or styling cream to keep the waves defined without weighing them down. Sleeping with a silk headscarf or hair bonnet will keep the waves in place and a protect the hair from drying out.’

What Next?

There’s lots in store for finger waves, says Eugene. ‘I can see the finger wave pixie continuing to evolve as we experiment with it, perhaps blending with other long length classic styles like ponytails and buns. Maybe also with centre parting instead the traditional side part,’ he muses. ‘Or even something more avant-garde, like braids with a finger wave pattern (as seen on BeyoncĂ©).
