The pixie mullet is taking over salons this season

ICYMI: short hair is having a moment this year. Whether it’s bobs, bixies, lobs or pixies, it seems we’re all pretty keen to let go of long locks in favour of something short, sleek and edgy – and the latest cut doing the rounds is the pixie mullet. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is A Pixie Mullet?

‘A pixie mullet is a fusion of two classic haircuts: the pixie and the mullet.’ explains Phoebe Friend, hair stylist and salon manager at SHAG! West London. ‘It essentially brings together the short length of the pixie and the mullet’s long, layered look at the back of the head.

‘But what sets it aside from the traditional pixie cut is the longer, more dramatic tail of hair through the back section of the head,’ she continues. ‘It’s definitely a contemporary, edgy and creative take on the classic shape.’

And with short hairstyles sitting firmly in the spotlight right now, this fresh take on the pixie is getting a lot of positive attention from both the internet – the tag #pixiemullet has a humble 7.9 million posts attached to it on TikTok right now – and the celebrity circuit. But what makes this cut specifically so popular, according to Phoebe, is its playfulness. ‘I believe it’s become more prominent in the salon recently because of its versatility and it can be a really fun way to switch things up if you’re growing out a short haircut,’ she says. ‘I’ve seen a few big names rocking this style recently – Miley Cyrus, Maggie Rogers and Rhianna – and it looks really striking and bossy on each of them.’

Who Suits This Cut?

Pretty much anyone can give this cut a go. ‘It’s a great option for any hair texture or density,’ confirms Phoebe. ‘The short wispy layers around the face can be altered to enhance certain features, meaning it can be tailored to suit most face shapes. Be sure to always ask your stylist for advice on this though if you’re uncertain.’

How To Ask For A Pixie Mullet In The Salon (& What To Expect)

If the this sounds like the short hairstyle for you, then it’s time to book that salon appointment. ‘In the salon, ask for very cropped, textured layers through the top and sides while maintaining a longer tail-like section through the back of the head, below the crown,’ advises Phoebe. She also recommends bringing in some reference imagery, that showcase any specific characteristics of the pixie mullet that you’d like to try.

How To Style A Pixie Mullet At Home

When it comes to refining the styling process at home, it really is a matter of experimenting to see what look you like best. But, to start with, Phoebe recommends, ‘For styling at home, I would lean towards products like mousse, sea salt or texturising sprays to give a purposeful messiness. When drying, you can simply leave to air dry or use a diffuser.’

What Next?

While already a striking cut, Phoebe reckons there’s more in store for the pixie mullet trend. ‘I think this style has the potential to evolve into more of an 80s mod-inspired shape,’ she says. Stay tuned.
