What Is A Straight Bob?

‘A straight bob is a super sleek take on the short hairstyle, where the hair is cut to a uniform length, usually around the chin or jawline, with clean, sharp edges,’ explains Oli Amodio, Co-Owner of Blue Tit Leyton. ‘It’s very clean, with minimal layering or texturing, giving it a smooth, polished finish. It has less texture and doesn’t curve under at the ends like other bob styles.’

While we hear a lot about loose waves and natural textures when it comes to modern bobs, sharper styles are coming into their own – especially with party season just around the corner. And, with 53.5 million posts (and counting) dedicated to the topic on TikTok, enthusiasm for the straight bob shows no signs of dying down.

And like most trends doing the rounds right now, the straight bob is rooted in nostalgia. ‘We had a massive trend for super straight in the 90s and 00s, but I’m seeing a resurgence of the straighteners,’ notes Oli. ‘Especially with this new length and simple styling. It’s sleek and elegant, but still does all the talking.’

Can You Pair It With A Fringe?

While you’ll typically find this look styled minimally with a middle part, Oli tells us a fringe can work too. ‘You can pair it with a full fringe or even a side fringe,’ he confirms. ‘But I think for maximum effect keeping it all one length will garner the most out of your new sleek look.’

Who Suits This Cut?

Bear in mind that this is a cut that emphasises glossy straight hair – meaning those with natural curls might find it a little harder to work with. However, when it comes to face shapes, Oli notes that the cut is fairly versatile. ‘A longer bob would suit a rounder face if you was want that slimmer, lengthier look,’ he notes. ‘However, taking it right to the jawline will definitely give you that head-turning wow factor.’

@nmkajumulo i get soo many questions about how i straighten my bob and how i keep it as flat as i do! so here we go! the number one thing is to BLOW YOUR HAIR OUT!! and like to the point where it is as straight as you can get it. Itll save you hair from a lot of heat damage and allow you less time to press out uour hair! #howistraightenmyhair #bluntbob #bluntbobhairstyle #blowout ♬ original sound – J.CABB

How To Ask For A Straight Bob In The Salon

When asking your stylist for a straight bob, come prepared with reference images that illustrate the kind of style you’re after. And, if this is a big hair transformation, be prepared for a new look; it takes a while to settle into a fresh cut, and it will take some getting used to.

How To Style A Straight Bob

Despite its high impact results, the straight bob is fairly low maintenance when it comes to styling – the main tool you’ll need in your arsenal is a pair of straighteners. ‘It’s an easy cut for many as it requires very little styling,’ agrees Oli. ‘If you have some wave or texture in your hair, then all you need are a few passes over with the straighteners (after applying some heat protector).’
