The TikTok Beauty Trends Taking Over 2024

The internet has spoken
In the world of beauty, there are three main streams from which we source our trends: the runway, the high street and the internet. In recent years, TikTok has come to dominate the latter category, giving rise to several micro trends that make an indelible mark on the hair, nails, makeup and skincare industries. But which ones came out on top this time round? From coquette nails to glass hair, mob wife makeup to pearl skin, these are some of the biggest TikTok beauty trends of 2024.
TikTok Beauty: The Biggest Trends Of 2024 So Far
1. Coquette
Ribbons and bows galore, the year got off to a pretty, frilly start thanks to the hyper-feminine coquette aesthetic. The epitome of girliness, this trend swept through fashion in a wave of pastel pink ruffles – and in the beauty sphere, it was all about dainty makeup looks that danced on the line between saccharine sweetness and flirty suggestiveness.
Nail salons took to the coquette trend immediately, with manicures styled in ribbons, pearls and pink French tips.‘A coquette manicure embodies a feminine, girly aesthetic,’ explained Emma Carnell, a nail technician at 10outof10. ‘It involves using pastel colours, hand-painting delicate bows and adorning nails with various charms to achieve a pretty and clean look.’
‘To sport this must-have look, opt for muted pastel shades, soft pinks – reminiscent of ballet slippers or chic milky whites,’ added the team at Townhouse. ‘If you fancy adding that little something extra, ask for a dainty bow or heart nail art accent; perfect for the ultimate coquette aesthetic.’

2. Mob Wife
Another trend that took over the early months of 2024, mob wife movement sits on the other side of the beauty spectrum from the coquette aesthetic; instead of girly pastels and bows, think rich, sexy glamour. Taking its cues from the women married to mobsters, both real and fictional, the mob wife look is all about embracing audacious, messy glamour. ‘It is a celebration of unapologetic brazenness, a departure from the demure looks that have dominated recent beauty trends,’ explained Nicola Moulton, a makeup and skincare expert at Beauty Pie. ‘It’s a bold statement that refuses to conform, encouraging individuals to embrace their inner power and confidence.’
Both hair and makeup thrive on the mantra ‘the bigger, the better’, expanding on glamour and drama through scale, texture, vibrancy and defined shapes. A little scary, but a lot sexy. ‘Think silver smoky eyes that command attention, vampish lips that leave a lasting impression, and hair that’s larger-than-life but slightly off-kilter,’ recommended Nicola, who also highlighted that the trend has since adapted for modern MUAs with quick-and-easy tutorials. ‘The larger-than-life mob wives were often bankrolled by their husbands, and had ample time to spend at the beauty salon. Now, the tutorials embrace a much faster, easier way to look super-groomed, and the end result is to please yourself, not your husband.’

3. Pearl Skin
And when it came to skincare, the one big beauty trend to make a consistent impact was pearl skin. Created using a combination skincare and makeup products, the goal of the trend is to create luminous, glowing skin – like a pearl. ‘Pearl skin is created using skincare products to brighten and hydrate for a glowing base, and is emphasised with carefully placed makeup,’ said Sharon Hilditch MBE, a skincare expert, celebrity facialist and founder of Crystal Clear Skincare. ‘Achieving pearl skin should be possible with the right skincare ingredients to suit your skin type, and complementary makeup products.’
‘We typically see dewy, glowy skin trends as we start to head towards spring and summer; everybody wants their makeup to be lighter and fresher in these months,’ added Melanie Baresse, a BY TERRY Global Makeup Artist. ‘I think we’ll see it move towards a more golden pearlescence that compliments sunkissed skin or that offers warm undertones for a summer skin look.’

4. Glass Hair
With awards season came another shiny (literally) new trend: glass hair. Focusing on healthy-looking locks with lots of shine, the hair look bounced off 2023’s quiet luxury movement with a nod to understated, yet expensive, chic. ‘Glass hair is a trend that refers to glossy, polished, ultra shiny hair,’ commented Valerie Benavides, a stylist at Hair By Sam McKnight. ‘It’s hair that reflects the light and looks incredibly lustrous, with mirror like shine. Glass hair is the ultimate luxe hairstyle, it’s rich and luxurious and there’s been a real resurgence of quiet luxury within beauty. Glossy hair looks healthy, but still natural and effortless.’

5. Balletcore
Dancing not too far behind the coquette aesthetic was balletcore. En pointe in every sense of the word, the trend takes its cues from the graceful looks and lifestyle of ballet dancers, and while 2023 took the trend to fashion – think dainty flats, delicate tutus and wrap cardigans – 2024 capitalised on the beauty sphere. We’re taking notes from the real ballerinas out there; it’s makeup and skincare that delivers a dewy, just-finished-a-showcase look with a lit-from-within glow and dusty pink blush, and hair looks that span from low buns and slick ponytails to intricate updos tied together with pink ribbons, just like the models in the Christian Siriano SS24 show.
@mattloveshair what’s the most important #TRESpartner of the year to me?? well that would be #NYFW of course!! @TRESemmé with @LacyRedway created the most ballerina core jaw dropping #hairstyles for the Christian Siriano s/s ‘24 show❤️❤️ #TRESnyfw #fashionweek ♬ Standout – Kid Dean
6. Tenniscore
Where strawberry girl summer was all the rage in 2023, this year we’re seeing the revival of tennis girl summer. Partly in thanks to Zendaya and her killer Challengers press tour outfits, the 2024 iteration of the trend has successfully migrated from court to red carpet to street style – and it’s not just the fashion, either. Tenniscore beauty is all about amplifying court and courtside sports chic. Think dewy, sun-kissed skin (possibly with a smattering of freckles) and no-makeup makeup, with hairstyles ranging from polished ponytails and slick braids to low buns and cute bows.
Speaking on tenniscore hair, Neville Hair & Beauty art director Jason Crozier said: ‘‘Tenniscore hair complements the tennis-inspired fashion trend. Tenniscore itself is a fashion and lifestyle trend inspired by classic tennis attire. It includes elements like preppy aesthetics, blending functionality with style for a clean, athletic look. When it comes to hair, styles are sporty, polished and practical, aligning with the clean, fresh look of tennis culture. Think sleek ponytails, headbands and braids.’

@kristinarodulfo Tenniscore is taking over beauty and I’m HERE FOR IT! 🎾 Bows, braids, and more trends I think we’ll see more of as the sport gains more popularity than ever (thanks in no small part to the tennis-centered @Challengers Movie starring #Zendaya and all the looks she’s been *serving*). I especially loved the white bow + braided ponytail #UrsulaStephen did at the London premiere 💯!! 7. Wild West
This ain’t Texas – but Beyoncé could’ve fooled us. The singer sparked a wave of country-inspired trends earlier this year with the release of her latest album Cowboy Carter, spanning from rhinestone hats and fringe jackets to big bouncy hair and cowboy-themed nails.
In the salon, we saw a revival of Western-themed styles, like Texan hair. ‘Texan hair means big hair,’ said Wes Sharpton, resident stylist at Hairstory. ‘Texas-born hair has been known for its volume and height, with those adopting the hairstyle taking the mantra: “the higher the hair, the closer to god.”’
Another hair trend, cowgirl curtains, adopts the same tenets. ‘Cowgirl curtains are a longer, fuller, volume-packed version of a curtain bang,’ explained Sarah McKenna, founder of The London Hair Lab. ‘Unlike the traditional curtain bang, cowgirl curtains are much heavier. They’re all about volume and embracing your natural texture so are cut thicker than a curtain bang, which would typically be wispier.’
The trend also extended to the nail bar, where nail technicians noticed an uptick in Western-themed manicures. ‘Cowboy nails are taking over in a variety of ways and colours,’ confirmed Holly Wolff, a nail technician at Neville Hair & Beauty. ‘The western inspiration is huge right now thanks to stars like Beyoncé , and there’s a growing interest in expressing individuality through nail art, with western motifs providing a unique and distinctive aesthetic… Designs can include cow print – either in a classic black and white, metallics, or even coco brown with orange, brown and white – as well as different shades of blues to represent denim.’

@yeshipolitoo Beyonces hair at the Super Bowl was giving everything it needed to give! Yall know I’m all about a super voluminous, side swept bang look! Beauty pageant, 80s, the bigger the hair, the closer to god vibes 💅🏼 The trick here is to use different size rollers & curl downward. Plus add lots of hairspray to keep that texture fluffy!! #hairtutorial #beyonce #beyoncehair #beyoncesuperbowl #texasholdem #cecred #voluminoushair ♬ TEXAS HOLD ‘EM – Beyoncé
8. Old Money
Another TikTok beauty trend that snuck its way into 2024 was the old money aesthetic. With videos tagged under #oldmoneyaesthetic sitting at 64 million views at the time of writing, it’s safe to say this is one of the buzzier trends of 2024. While initially starting out in fashion – think quiet luxury, Saltburn style – the trend quickly made its way to salons as more and more people began requesting variations of the old money bobs and old money blonde hair.
The trend is all about keeping up an old school, upper class vibe, with super glossy, voluminous locks cut above the shoulders in a rich shade of blonde. ‘The old money bob is a hairstyle that exudes sophistication and timeless elegance,’ explained Jason Crozier, hairdresser at Neville Hair and Beauty. ‘It’s characterised by its simplicity and refined appearance, typically featuring a length that grazes the jawline or falls just below it. The cut is clean and structured, with subtle layers that add volume without overt texturing.’
‘Old money blonde essentially looks like you’ve got naturally fantastic hair,’ added Zoe Irwin, Creative Director at John Frieda Salons. ‘This is a style of blonde that is more seamless in its application – rather than streaky or chunky – with the colours melted and blended into one another. The tone tends to be a mix of warm, beige and ash tones – not applied in prominent streaks, but more of a delicate highlight. When you have darker hair, these tones could be one or two shades up from the base colour, just a little bit lighter so you wouldn’t get anything that was too piece-y.’

9. Burgundy
If summer was all about Brat green, burgundy was THE shade of autumn/winter. From maroon manicures to cherry cola hair, this rich red has been a staple in the beauty sphere – largely thanks to TikTok’s obsession with cultivating the perfect fall aesthetic.
The app, which has racked up over over 93.8 million posts for #maroonnaildesignideas and a further 191 million views for videos on ‘cherry cola hair’, has been fuelling the push for this autumnal shade – but experts have noted that it’s a classic in its own right. ‘This shade instantly feels reminiscent of crisp leaves and mulled wine – while adding a touch of elegance that’s ideal for cooler weather,’ noted Lynn Mason, nail expert at Mavala. ‘Its deep, bold tone complements a variety of skin tones and outfits, making it a versatile choice that feels both sophisticated and cosy.’

10. Glitter Freckles
Now, we’ve heard of a shimmery eyeshadow, a glossy lip and a luminescent highlighter – but what about glitter freckles? A surprise autumn trend, this look did the (internet) rounds after Taylor Swift was spotted at a Chiefs game wearing a Vivienne Westwood ensemble with gold glitter freckles. The shimmer added a playful (and experimental) touch to Taylor’s going-out look, and set the trend for fancy freckles in motion – with 66 million posts in counting covering the topic on TikTok.
Taylor got her freckles from Florida-based beauty brand Fazit, which sells glitter freckles makeup patches for just £13. Fazit co-founder Aliett Buttelman shared her live reaction on TikTok, alongside the news that her sales increased by 2,500 percent in just 13 hours following the event.
