A Closer Look At Amy Powney & Monica Vinader’s New Collection

We’d never say ‘no’ to another Amy Powney x Monica Vinader collaboration – and, thankfully, we won’t have to. The two have teamed up once again on a collection of five new jewellery styles and a collaborative fashion piece (a first for the jewellery brand).

Described as a continuation of the legacy of their previous collaborations, this latest offering draws inspiration from the unique beauty found in nature. ‘With this collection we have drawn deep inspiration from the natural world around us,’ Amy Powney tells C&TH. ‘As a society, we’re so conditioned to accept that beauty must look a certain way. But when we turn to mother nature and see how she creates the most imperfectly perfect things, we can see where true beauty lies and that has inspired this collection.’

On what drew them to working together again, Monica Vinader says: ‘Throughout the years, Amy and I have developed an incredible friendship and a deep mutual respect based on our shared creative passion and a commitment to setting higher sustainability standards in our respective industries.

‘We have a long way to go when it comes to improving environmental and ethical practices. And while this looks slightly different in fashion and jewellery, our message becomes stronger when we come together to rally for creating long-lasting change.’

‘The close friendship and partnership Monica and I have demonstrates how creativity and collaboration can be more impactful when we collectively share knowledge and passion,’ adds Amy. ‘Together, we are able to reframe the prosperity of the fashion and jewellery sectors to be driven out of a care for the impact we have.’

Collection Highlights

There are five new jewellery pieces for Monica Vinader fans to explore: a ring, bracelet, necklace, earrings and cufflinks. ‘Each piece of jewellery champions asymmetry in design and the organic forms of one-of-a-kind Keshi pearls,’ Monica tells us. This means no two items will be the same; each one will have its own unique shape and design.

‘The organic one-of-a-kind shape of the Keshi pearls and asymmetry is what makes them beautiful,’ agrees Amy. ‘They’re bold in their differences and are a celebration of nature’s wonderful variations. The Keshi pearl large drop earrings are my favourite items in the collection. I love that, as a pair, they are purposefully different.’

Also setting this collection apart from its predecessors is the introduction of the duo’s first garment: a button down shirt. ‘Amy and I wanted to challenge ourselves and find a new synergy between sustainable fashion and jewellery,’ says Monica. ‘We co-created our first ever garment to embody the balance of power and sophistication. It’s a considered take on a classic button-down shirt along with accompanying cufflinks featuring one-of-a-kind freshwater Keshi pearls.’

The garment’s wearability is also enhanced by cufflinks that can be removed and used elsewhere. ‘I love that the cufflinks can be removed and used throughout your wardrobe. It invigorates old styles and cherished pieces,’ agrees Amy. ‘Bringing a garment to life with interesting and creative hardwear has always been at the heart of what I have done at Mother of Pearl. When embarking on our third collaboration together Monica and I wanted to explore this further. We’ve brought her expertise in jewellery and my expertise in sustainable fashion together on the one garment.’ The result? A timeless shirt for every season and occasion.

Amy Powney & Monica Vinader On Sustainability

The new collection is also powered by a shared belief in making joyful items that are kinder to the planet. ‘Sustainability is central to everything Monica and I have done together. It is a shared passion and why we continue to create and inspire each other,’ confirms Amy. ‘We constantly push each other on how we can improve, both as designers and personally.’

‘The jewellery pieces are crafted from 100 percent recycled, traceable 18ct gold vermeil while the black version of the button-down shirts are made from regenerative cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell,’ highlights Monica. ‘And beyond this collection, we both continue to expand our commitment to sustainable practices.

‘At Monica Vinader, over the past year, we have expanded our industry-leading supply chain transparency initiative, Product Passport by launching high quality lab grown diamonds and our first fully traceable gemstones,’ she continues. ‘And with Amy’s recent documentary Fashion Reimagined, she brings to life the urgent issues facing the fashion industry today and offers solutions on how to fix them.’

Reflecting on the last few years, Amy added: ‘The last two years have been an incredible journey, through collaborations such as this, to the documentary which I featured in, Fashion Reimagined, to being invited to do a TED talk. I’m a designer but I also find myself taking on an activist role more and more, to ensure we educate and inform and protect this planet we all share and its natural resources.’
