It’s About To Get Much Easier To Travel To The Amalfi Coast

With its pastel-painted villages, shimmering bays and clifftop views, the Amalfi Coast is one of the world’s most glamorous destinations. But the journey there isn’t so idyllic, requiring an often traffic-ridden drive from Naples, or a time-consuming combination of trains and buses. It’s about to get a whole lot easier to travel there, though, thanks to the reopening of local airport Salerno Costa d’Amalfi.

The Amalfi Coast’s Airport Is Reopening This July

Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is located in southern Italy, 28 miles southeast of Amalfi, and around 13 miles from Salerno. The airport isn’t entirely new: first constructed in 1926, it has been used on and off as a military air hub for the past 98 years. Commercial flights ran there from 2008 to 2016, but for the past eight years it has been used solely for training and private purposes.

This July, though, Salerno Costa d’Amalfi will reopen following a long-awaited facelift, which will include the reintroduction of commercial flights. UK travellers will be able to fly direct from London Gatwick to Salerno with EasyJet, with services kicking off on 13 July 2024. The route will run twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with fares starting from just £27.99pp.

Spanish airline Volotea will also be launching flights from locations including Cagliari, Verona and Catania.

There are plans for continued expansion of the airport over the next few years, with work on a new terminal currently in progress – expected to be completed in 2027. By 2043, it’s predicted that the airport will welcome six million people each year, which is set to relieve pressure on Naples airport, which is notoriously busy.
