Damian Hargung and Harriet Herbig-Matten lead this globally popular German-language Amazon Prime Video series set in an elite boarding school. Herbig-Matten stars as Ruby Bell, a hardworking student determined to secure a place at the University of Oxford, while Hargung plays James Beaufort, an arrogant, wealthy heir whose life is all about privilege. It’s mainly set in the titular school – but where was Maxton Hall filmed?

Where Was Maxton Hall Filmed?

Maxton Hall was filmed at Marienburg Castle, a Gothic castle near Hannover. Built between 1858 and 1867, this is where the series’ school scenes are filmed, with additional filming taking place in Berlin, London and Oxford.

Was Maxton Hall Filmed In Oxford?

Yes, when the characters travel to the University of Oxford, filming actually took place in the ancient English city. Ruby and James stay at St Hilda’s College for their interviews, while more Oxford colleges also feature in the series.

It’s not just the Oxford scenes that were filmed in Oxford, though. The scenes in Ruby’s hometown were also filmed here, including the Greek restaurant she works in.

Where Is Maxton Hall Set?

Despite being a German-language series, Maxton Hall is actually set at a prestigious boarding school in England. The series is based on German author Mona Kasten’s trilogy of novels, Save Me, Save You and Save Us, all set at Maxton Hall.

Is It A Real School?

Maxton Hall isn’t a real school, but it bears similarities to plenty of prestigious English schools, from Eton to St Paul’s.

Will There Be A Season 2?

Yes, Amazon renewed Maxton Hall for a second season in May 2024 after its debut week attracted the largest global viewership of any non-English language Prime original.
