Step inside 60 Curzon
While celebrities enjoyed lavish meals at Mirabelle from the 1930s to the early 2000s, the former restaurant now looks a little different: the site has been transformed into a collection of luxury apartments. This is 60 Curzon, one of the most coveted addresses in the capital, and while plenty of esteemed individuals have already claimed a slice of the development, a select few residences are still on the market – including this magnificent show apartment. We caught up with interior designer Tatjana von Stein to hear about her vision for the space and how she paid homage to the building’s incredible Art Deco legacy.

What’s the background and story for the project?
60 Curzon is a beautiful Art Deco-inspired building in the heart of Mayfair with interior architecture by Thierry Despont. We had the honour to design within the building and bring our own interpretation to life.
What was the brief?
We were given a blank, two-bedroom canvas to design an apartment that gives a sense to potential buyers what the apartment could look like. We therefore had to imagine who might live here, how they might live here, how they want to feel in space. We were tasked to design with our aesthetic flair, which has a nostalgic Art Deco inspiration already but with a contemporary take.

Talk to us about your early inspiration. Did you pull together a moodboard?
Our design process always starts with a narrative. We start drawing influences and research on the neighbourhood, the building, and the target market in hand and draw from this a mood, a feeling, a story really that we design around. Usually it starts with flow, mood boards, materiality, sketches and drawings.
There’s a notable Art Deco influence throughout the apartment. Was this the starting point of the project, or did you incorporate the Art Deco elements gradually?
I have a soft spot for the Art Deco era and, rather unconsciously at first, it has come through in most of our work. The minute I stepped into the building, I was transported, aligned and filled with inspiration. It’s therefore a base reference that informed but didn’t dictate the designs. The choice of mouldings, mix of materials and the sense of style and mood we wanted to create echoes the era but with a contemporary take.

What was the vision for the living room?
A cultured, entertainer’s home. We imagine someone who has chosen to live in the heart of Mayfair, has a keen interest in the arts, culinary and members club scene of Mayfair and therefore brings some of this feel into the living space. A lacquer home bar from our Mise en Scène collection takes centre stage in the room, gently separating the dining area and living space while the marble statue overlooks it all.
What materials did you particularly work with and why?
We worked with timbers for its warmth and timeless aesthetic. I have a penchant for burl wood, its natural movement and conceptual juxtaposition – it’s historically been considered a noble wood but is actually cut from the disease of a tree. We also worked with lacquers & glass for their reflective properties; they always bring a sense of glamour and keep the story moving in the room. They’re a fantastic way of adding colour, too.
Stainless steel was utilized for its edge and rawness, and we also employed paint effects throughout the apartment. I love working with artists on their expressions within a space, to add more of a dreamy moment throughout; you’ll spot a variety of artwork as well as trompe l’oeils and our silk painted sun extruding from the silk-wallpapered walls.

Were there any challenges during the project? How did you work around these?
We had a short four months to deliver the project, which is both a challenge and an opportunity to trust your gut feeling and just go for it! A number of the furniture pieces are from our own collection, which gave us this flexibility with our French workshops and, of course, working with antiques does not always have an imminent solution but gives long lasting joy.
Were there any sustainability considerations in the project?
We always consider the sustainability of projects, from materials we use, craftsmen we work with, and working with antiques to keep them living, as well as creating pieces which are durable and made with integrity and love.

What’s your favourite part about the end result?
The feeling. The moment you step through the flat, you’re in a little world. We hosted an event to open the space and the concept behind this apartment truly came to life.
How could readers recreate this look at home?
My approach to design – particularly residential design – is layered. I believe that personality and warmth doesn’t come from perfection but from a layered approach to styles and materials. By doing so, you let everything sing together uniquely.
The apartment is on the market for £10.95 million. For more information, visit 60curzon.com
