Spring has made an early entrance with this delightful pastel shade
From terracotta tones to primary colours, there are plenty of stunning shades set to dominate the design world in 2025 – but one that the experts didn’t predict is the resurgence of pastel yellow. Here’s everything you need to know about the butter yellow interiors trend.
The Butter Yellow Interiors Trend, Explained
We might be wading through the depths of winter, but spring isn’t too far away – especially if you jump on the butter yellow trend. Much like many recent design crazes (from joy drenching to modern surrealism), butter yellow is guaranteed to lift your mood.
The trend takes its cue from the Dulux Colour of the Year for 2024: a slightly brighter shade of yellow that was dubbed ‘True Joy’. Meanwhile, butter yellow itself featured on the 2025 Pinterest Palette – a report focused solely on emerging colour trends – and it was also chosen as 2025’s Colour of the Year by KitchenAid, who described it as ‘a soft, energising yellow with a creamy, satin finish that spreads warmth and cherished memories across the home.’

While the shade is often a go-to for designers looking to add a pop of pastel to any room, it’s experienced a notable surge in popularity of late – largely thanks to a growing appetite for brighter, versatile colours rather than creams and whites.
‘Butter is the ultimate new neutral in this year’s playful take on colour,’ explains Becca Stern, co-founder and creative director of Mustard Made. ‘Bolder than beige, it has a European edge and versatility at its core.’
Butter yellow does, in fact, present a whole world of opportunities when it comes to building a colour palette. Pair it with delicate blues and creams for a cottagecore-inspired look; add furniture pieces in rich, dark wood for a more rustic vibe; or go bold and modern with deep reds and greens. ‘The shade blends as seamlessly with cosy pastels as it does with an unexpected pop of red,’ Becca confirms.
Plus, of course, it exudes optimism, which is much needed in the colder months. ‘Butter yellow brings a cheerful warmth to any space, making it perfect for areas where people gather – whether that’s a kitchen, dining room, or even a hallway,’ says Emma Bestley, co-founder and creative director of YesColours. ‘It can serve as a great accent or a spatial divider in an open plan space, and it’s known to aid clear thinking and decision making, so it’s one to consider in your home office, too.’ Perhaps your home deserves a butter yellow makeover…
