It’s one of the easiest ways to add some festive cheer to your home.

What are you hoping to unwrap this Christmas? If, like us, you’re thinking about bypassing party season this year and hibernating through until 2025, how about turning your house into a giant present? Door bows have been trending throughout 2024, so it’s no surprise that a festive door bow is back as one of the biggest Christmas interior trends of the year. Here’s how to create yours.

What’s A Christmas Door Bow?

First thing’s first, what exactly is it? While bow garlands have long been an alternative to a festive wreath, interiors enthusiasts have taken things one step further recently by going beyond a bow tied onto a door knocker and wrapping the entire front door up in a giant ribbon, giving it the appearance of a wrapped gift. The door is wrapped from top to bottom and side to side, with an oversized bow securing the two sections of ribbons together. There are already thousands of videos on TikTok giving step by step instructions on creating your own at home, with top results amassing almost 5 million views.

What Sort Of Fabric Should You Use?

A very fine, sheer fabric like tulle is best for this, so that your door can actually still close with the bow attached. (Christmas decorations shouldn’t stand in the way of home security, ideally.) Of course, with sustainability in mind, reusing old fabrics or off-cuts to create your bow is a great way to tap into the trend without creating waste or splashing out on new materials. However, unlike a freshly-created single-use wreath, you can recreate your door bow year after year and wash the fabric between uses.

How Much Fabric Will You Need?

You need three lengths of fabric to create your door bow. One should be just over double the length of your door, one should be just over double the width. The third should be big enough to create the bow itself, so the size of this is dependent on how big you want the bow to be.

As a guide, the average UK front door is 1.98m high and 0.76m wide, so allowing six metres of fabric for the door itself plus two for the bow should be plenty.

How Do You Create The Door Bow?

Follow these steps to create your simple Christmas Door Bow at home.

  1. Cut your fabric into three strips, one four metres for the length wrap, one two metres for the width, and two metres for the bow.
  2. Wrap the door length-ways and width-ways, securing with knots on the inside of the door and tying the points the fabrics cross with string or wire.
  3. Tie the third length of fabric around the point the fabric crosses on the front of the door and secure at the midway point with a knot.
  4. Create your bow with this length of fabric, decorating with extra fabric or decorations as desired.
