From mocha mousse to cherry red
Itching to give your home a transformation in the New Year? You’ll need some inspiration – and luckily the interior design experts have been busy predicting all of the buzzy colour trends we’ll see in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms in 2025. Here’s the verdict.
Colour Trends For 2025
Light Brown
After Pantone’s recent Colour of the Year announcement, it’s no surprise that brown – or ‘mocha mousse’ – is predicted to be one of next year’s biggest colour trends.
‘Mocha is really versatile: it can offer a strong hit of punchy colour, but it can also act as a balancing shade that blends with more subtle palettes,’ says Andrew Griffiths, founder of A New Day Studio. ‘It’s a natural evolution from the earthy pinks that have been popular for quite a while now, marking a move in a slightly darker, earthier direction.’
Earthy is certainly one of the biggest buzzwords when it comes to colour in 2025, so why not incorporate some rich brown shades into your interiors? ‘Mocha is a warm hue that pairs beautifully with cream and neutral tones,’ explains Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-founder of Dowsing & Reynolds. ‘Colour-drenching your entire room in a mocha shade will create a decadent feel, but if you’re worried about your space looking too dark, pair the brown with warm neutrals like whites and creams.’ From textured wallpaper and wooden furniture to lamps, soft furnishings and accessories, the sky’s the limit when it comes to adding a touch of coffee brown to your home.
Terracotta
If you’re looking for a more vibrant alternative to the earthy look, terracotta is a brilliant counterpart to brown and green tones. ‘Inspired by clay, terracotta offers an earthy, natural look which sits well in biophilic schemes,’ says Debbie Leigh, design manager at ILIV. ‘It works well when paired with fabrics like linen, giving spaces a grounded, organic vibe. With its warm undertones, terracotta is the perfect shade to bring a sense of cosiness to a space.’
Purple
While deep brown and pink shades have been growing in popularity for a while, purple might not be on your radar when it comes to design trends – but it’s set to make a grand return. ‘Purple is certainly making a comeback for 2025,’ says Philippa Thorp, founder of London-based design studio Thorp. ‘However, it’s a colour that can easily overpower others, so thoughtful pairings are key. Try purple with fresh apple green and cool ivory colours for a refreshing balance.’
Want to bring a touch of lilac to your space, or go bold with amethyst tones? Start with accessories and subtle additions, says Philippa. ‘Never let purple be the lead – it works beautifully as a supporting act.’
Papaya
While the terracotta look is all about deep orange-brown and dusty pink shades, papaya boasts a much lighter coral undertone – and it just might be the pop of colour you’re looking for. ‘Papaya is a vibrant shade that can be paired with other bold colours like cobalt blue and sage green,’ notes Turkish ceramic artist Esma Dereboy. If you want to create a more pared-back scheme, simply ‘allow the coral to speak for itself by adding it to a neutral scheme. Coral will definitely be a trend showing up in soft furnishings, table decor and feature walls, in 2025’ she adds.
Green
From forest green velvet seating to colour-drenched pistachio walls, green is shaping up to be another popular colour in 2025. ‘Just as grey tones are being replaced by earthy hues, shades like soft green and amber are becoming the new neutrals,’ says Gareth Coxall, creative director at Terrys.
While green might feel like a safer choice than terracotta or lilac, it can be tricky to decide on the right shade for your space. ‘Use the colour with purpose: pick a green that you really love and will be happy to live with for many years,’ advises Kris Manalo, creative lead at Atkin & Thyme. ‘Green is in its element when placed in bright south-facing rooms, effortlessly creating a vibrant look. When adding it to a darker, north-facing room or a space with a blueish hue, opt for a warmer green and pair it with complementary colours like deep purples, to help create a sophisticated feel.’
Cherry Red
Already a hit in fashion and beauty, cherry red is the ultimate stylish addition to your interiors; according to Pinterest’s annual trend report, we’ll see it everywhere in 2025.
If you want to start mood-boarding your cherry red home, start with ‘deep reds as the main colour for your walls or furniture, creating a rich, warm backdrop,’ says Tom Revill, creative director of Plank Hardware. ‘Add pops of accent colours to enhance the overall look: consider small decor items in mustard, burnt orange or deep green.’
For a more subtle take on the trend, you can incorporate ‘high-gloss lacquered accessories’ and ‘subtle finishes like burgundy and red cabinet knobs’, Tom continues. ‘Incorporating brass – especially brown-toned antique brass hardware – will add a touch of sophistication, as the metallic tones beautifully complement the deep red and rich brown undertones of the cherry colour. Use deep red velvet for upholstery or accent pillows to enhance the luxurious feel.’
Primary Colours
Another buzzy Pinterest prediction? ‘Primary play’ – the perfect excuse to experiment with bold colours and dive right into dopamine decor.
‘We’re seeing a bold resurgence of the primary colour palette,’ confirms Karl Openshaw, Lead Creative at Blocc House of Interiors. ‘Red, yellow and blue aren’t just nostalgic hues; they’re set to define our interiors in ways that feel fresh, unexpected and exciting. It’s a kind of rebellion against ‘grown-up’ interior design schemes.’ From vibrant cobalt to sunshine yellow, the primary colour trend just might be the key to joyful interiors in 2025.
