The reign of maximalism continues
What do you get when you combine pattern drenching with the curated clutter craze? ‘Curated clashing’, of course. We asked the experts what this maximalist bedroom trend really involves – and how to get it right.
Maximalist Bedroom Ideas: Curated Clashing

It might have started with joy drenching, or perhaps the sudden popularity of primary colours, but however you look at it, there’s no denying that maximalism is dominating interiors in 2025. We’ve seen bold murals on ceilings and bright colours transforming powder rooms, but when it comes to bedroom design, pattern drenching is getting an upgrade with the ‘curated clashing’ trend.
As you might expect, this particular trend brings a sense of intentionality to maximalist spaces. Based on the principles of pattern drenching, it’s all about using carefully chosen colour palettes and cleverly layered prints to create a cohesive and impactful bedroom.
‘While curated clashing instantly injects a sense of the contemporary into any space, it’s particularly effective in the bedroom, as the layering creates a cosy and cocooning feel,’ explains Sarah McCann, print and product expert at Voyage Maison.

So, where do you start? ‘A favourite approach of mine is to pair a big, blousy wallpaper pattern with smaller, busier curtains, or use a similar print across different-sized cushions,’ says Sarah. Varying the scale of your patterns – while sticking to a relatively narrow range of colours – will increase visual interest while enabling the look to remain cohesive. ‘Playing with size and height ensures that the elegance of each design remains distinct amidst this maximalist style,’ Sarah explains.
Texture is another crucial aspect. ‘You can elevate your room by incorporating a variety of textures and materials,’ says Sarah. ‘Accessories like quilted throws or fringed cushions will really infuse your space with a sense of richness and luxury.’ Why not take some inspiration from the Rococo look and finish things off with a few frills and bows, too?
‘This trend is a great way to unleash your creativity and experiment,’ Sarah concludes. ‘While there’s no need to adhere strictly to specific colours or patterns, keeping textures and scale in the forefront of your mind will help your maximalist bedroom maintain its curated charm.’
